Course Title: EDUC 5133 Z4 - Counselling Skills
Contract Term: June 1, 2021 to August 31, 2021 (Summer Intersession)
Course Schedule: 1:00pm - 5:00pm, July 20-23 and July 26-30, 2021 - Remote Learning (TBC)

Course Description: This course focuses on salient conditions, skills, and processes that have been associated through research with effective counsellor-client relationships and positive client growth. Students begin to shape a personalized coherent model of counselling as they adopt a comparative lens in their exploration of various models of counselling. They participate in lectures, discussions, and structured exercises, including role playing and video-recorded simulated counselling sessions. Prerequisite or concurrent: EDUC 5033.
Acadia University's Counselling Program is accredited with the Council on Accreditation of Counsellor Education Programs (CACEP) and meets the requirements for post-graduation national certification with CCPA and provincial registration with NSCCT. As such, all courses in the program have required core competencies that students must attain. Instructors are advised to consult with the Counselling Program Coordinator to identify the specific competencies relevant to the course they teach. A template is provided to instructors so that they may indicate competencies addressed in their course outlines.
Note: Candidates should be prepared to teach this course in a hybrid learning approach, using a blend of in-person and synchronous and asynchronous on-line and /or remote delivery platforms.
Qualifications: The successful applicant must possess at minimum a Master's degree in the field (Counselling, Counselling Psychology, Social Work or related area), be registered/certified with a professional counselling body (Registered Counselling Therapist with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists, Certified Canadian Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, Registered Social Worker, or Registered Psychologist with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology preferred), and have extensive and current professional experience relevant to the course content area. Preference will be given to applicants who possess a doctoral degree in Counselling or Counselling Psychology or a related field, or currently enrolled in a doctoral program in these areas, and evidence of scholarship in counselling or a related area. Formal academic training, development and experience in counsellor supervision and/or possession of a counsellor supervision credential (e.g., CCC-S) is considered an asset.
