Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for the temporary (up to two (2) years) Pool Operator position with Corporate and Customer Services. The Pool Operator position encompasses the following: water testing in accordance with regulations, balancing pool chemistry to within industry regulations, maintain chemical barrels, perform backwashing of sand filters, DE tanks, clean/vacuum pools, perform pool inspections checks, perform necessary repairs and maintenance as required on DE tanks, wave units, skimmers, report required repairs to supervisor, open and close outdoor pools, provide chemical orders to supervisor, store chemical deliveries, perform general and annual maintenance on pools, and other duties assigned by supervisor. Indoor pool operations are year round; outdoor pool operations, typically May - October.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • All pool maintenance to be performed by following the guidelines in the "Nova Scotia Operational Guidelines for Aquatic Facilities," current guidelines dated 2014, and the "Pool and Spa Operator Handbook" by the National Swimming Pool Foundations, current edition.
  • Maintains water chemistry balance in indoor and outdoor pools.
  • Informs the Supervisor or designate of all problems or potential problems (high TDS, improper chemical levels, or anything with the potential to affect effective and efficient operation).
  • Maintains pool equipment including pumps, filters, heaters and feeders.
  • Participates in after-hour events effecting operations (water quality, fecals, etc.).
  • Sweeps, back washes and vacuums pools as required.
  • General care, maintenance and safe operation of assigned equipment and tools.
  • Loads and unloads equipment and materials as required.
  • Keeps inventory of equipment and chemicals, reagents and other necessary supplies and orders necessary supplies for the efficient and effective operation of all pools with direct liaison with the Manager or designate.
  • All Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are to be maintained for the appropriate chemicals used by the Pool Operator at all times. Trained in WHMIS. Required to attend updates, workshops or training as required.
  • Contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRM.
  • Maintain log sheets in "Pool Chemistry Log," and daily inspections and log sheets in "Pool Inspection Checks" log book.
  • Must have ability to pass a Security Clearance and Child Abuse Registry.
  • Must provide a current Driver Abstract.
  • Communicate with the general public on a regular basis, related to duties performed.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must work well with minimum supervision.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Grade 12 (or equivalent combination of education and experience) is required.
  • Minimum 2 (two) years experience in pool operations and/or pool chemistry.
  • Certificate or diploma in pool chemistry, maintenance and mechanical operation of swimming pools (CPO or equivalent). May consider applicants with previous CPO (or equivalent) certification who would be willing to recertify within 6 months of employment.

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, pumps, filters, chemical feeders, heaters and associated pool mechanicals.
  • Good attendance and work record.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • WHMIS, CPR/First Aid certification, and Fall Arrest or ability to successfully complete.
  • Must have a good driving record with a valid Class 5 NS driver's license.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

WORK STATUS: Temporary, up to 2 years; full-time hours
HOURS OF WORK: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift (Tuesday through Saturday); 40 hours per week
SALARY: $23.49 per hour as per the CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement
WORK LOCATION: 375 Cowie Hill Road, Halifax; various HRM pool locations.
