About the Company
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Assistant Accounting Manager / Controller to join our team at a well-established law firm. The ideal candidate will possess strong accounting expertise, specifically in the legal industry, and have experience preparing financial statements, managing budgets, and implementing financial controls. This is an onsite role that requires a professional who can thrive in a fast-paced environment and work closely with senior management.
About the Role
  • Prepare and review accurate and timely financial statements, ensuring compliance with legal industry accounting standards and regulations.
  • Manage the preparation of annual budgets, including monitoring performance against budgets and providing variance analysis.
  • Oversee & preform daily accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and reconciliations.
  • Assist in managing the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring proper documentation and reporting.
  • Support tax filings and collaborate with external auditors during the annual audit process.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and potential areas for cost control or efficiency improvements.
  • Prepare management reports, financial analysis, and ad hoc reports as requested by senior management.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of internal controls to maintain the integrity of financial data and safeguard firm assets.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors, banks, and clients regarding financial transactions and invoicing.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, provincial, and federal tax regulations and legal industry standards.

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • In the process of obtaining or recently obtained CPA (Canadian Certified Public Accountant) designation.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a legal or professional services firm.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian accounting principles (GAAP) and legal industry accounting practices.
  • Proven experience in preparing financial statements, managing budgets, and financial analysis.
  • Solid knowledge of accounting software and Microsoft Excel (advanced skills).
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information in a clear and concise manner.
  • A proactive, self-starter who works well in a team environment and takes initiative.
