The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Consultant to join our team and play a key role in growing Urban Equations Energy Systems Advisory practice by advising on low-carbon energy strategies and solutions across North America. The successful candidate will establish client relationships and lead sustainable realestate and energysystem projects, providing the technical analysis, business modelling, and project management needed to deliver integrated, sustainable energy solutions for communities, buildings, and utilities.

Working closely with developers, utilities, policymakers, and industry leaders, the Senior Consultant will drive best-in-class energy efficiency solutions, financial feasibility assessments, and technical implementation strategies that guide clients toward achieving low-carbon, high-performance developments.

Key Responsibilities

Specifically, you will:

  • Lead energy system consulting servicesin areas such asdistrict energy systems (DES), geothermal, solar, waste heat recovery, and energy storage
  • Conductconcept studies, financial feasibility assessments, and strategic energy planningfor district energy projects.
  • Assesscapital expenditure (CapEx), operational expenditure (OpEx), and lifecycle coststo optimize financial viability.
  • Develop business cases forDES adoption by developers, public authorities, utilities, and policymakers.
  • Own client relationships, facilitating strategic engagement, trust-building, and outcome delivery.
  • Lead business case development for low-carbon and net-zero strategies, integrating technical and financial considerations.
  • Supervise, mentor, and review work by consultants and analysts, supporting team growth and development.
  • Lead regulatory and policy advisory work, producing industry-facing reports and influencing stakeholder decisions.
  • Coordinate and lead multi-stakeholder collaborations, including developers, municipalities, and utilities.
  • Drive proposal writing, strategic scoping, and pricing models for new business pursuits.
  • Ensure delivery quality, profitability, and alignment with Urban Equations impact objectives.
  • Present at industry events, contribute thought leadership, and represent UE in the market.

Experience & Skills:

  • 58 years of progressive experience in sustainability consulting, real estate advisory, or energy planning.
  • Undergraduate degree in engineering, business, finance, planning, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Technical understanding of district energy systems, renewable energy technologies, and energy-efficient / low-carbon building systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience analyzing financial and energy-related data and translating insights into strategic, business, and financial recommendations.
  • Proficiency in financial modelling, including cash flow analysis, cost-benefit assessments, and forecasting (considered a strong asset).
  • Project management skills, with the ability to contribute to multiple projects, meet tight deadlines, and ensure quality deliverables.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, clients, and stakeholders across the public and private sectors.
  • Understanding of embodied carbon, life cycle assessments, sustainability in real estate, and the development industry in Canada.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word required.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex ideas into clear, visual, and written formats.
  • Advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., P. Eng, LEED AP, CFA) are considered assets.
  • Interest or experience in real estate processes, operations, and/or asset management.
  • Proven leadership experience in client engagement and project delivery.
