DEFINITION:

Under the direction of the Roads Foreman, operates equipment & tools for construction, utilities and road maintenance, snow clearing and winter road maintenance, and performs manual duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  1. Operate equipment assigned on a day-to-day basis including, but not limited to, graders with snowplowing wing, bulldozers, loaders with snowplow blade or bucket (one yard and over), backhoes, excavators, dump truck (over five yards), street sweepers and self-loading scraper;
  2. Operate special equipment (refuse collection truck, vactor truck, etc.), as required;
  3. Operate light equipment (sidewalk sweepers/machines, etc.) as required;
  4. Dig near and around water and sewer lines and mains, as well as other utility services;
  5. Inspect equipment daily for visible damage, for fluid and fuel requirements, electrical systems, tire checks, etc., and report any defects to Foreman;
  6. Assist with assembly, removal and adjustment of attachments to various pieces of equipment;
  7. Prepare and maintain daily operational records and reports;
  8. Assist with manual duties including, but not limited to, drainage ditch maintenance, brush clearing, road marking, pipe laying, shovelling, pavement, flagging, concrete work, jack hammering, street sign maintenance, valve and hydrant maintenance, refuse collection, etc.;
  9. Assist in training and orientating staff, as may be required;
  10. Emergency call outs, standby, and shift work may be required;
  11. Other related duties, as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Grade twelve education;
  2. Minimum of three years' related experience with a background in operating and maintaining heavy equipment;
  3. Mechanical aptitude;
  4. Demonstrated ability to operate relevant equipment safely and efficiently in close proximity to service lines;
  5. Ability to work to given lines and grades;
  6. A good understanding of municipal infrastructure;
  7. Good physical condition and able to perform heavy manual labour;
  8. Good working knowledge of WorkSafeBC Regulations and the Motor Vehicle Act, as it pertains to the work involved;
  9. First Aid training;
  10. Ability to work independently and to accomplish tasks and assignments;
  11. Ability to deal effectively with co-workers and the public;
  12. Valid Class 3 B.C. Driver's Licence, with air brakes endorsement.
