Your role at GEI. This position is based out of Henvey Inlet First Nation (HIFN) Reserve #2 (Lands Office) with most work occurring on HIFN Reserve #2, crown lands, and French River Provincial Park within the Parry Sound 033 fire footprint. This is a part-time/full-time, seasonal position working variable hours per week, on an as-needed basis, from May 24, 2025 until July 24, 2025.The position consist of: Reporting to GEI field ecologists that were awarded Ganawenim Meskiki Initiative funding relating to Section K of the Henvey Inlet Wind Project compensation in support of the HIFN Environmental Permit. The field assistant conducts investigative field work as part of a team studying the endangered Kirtland's Warbler breeding population. They assist in data collection, storage and compilation, and assist in reporting as part of long-term research to better understand the species and its habitat. Essential Responsibilities & Duties:

• Assist in data collection via ArcGIS: Survey 123 and Collector to track data and survey of a small Kirtland's Warbler population from late May to late July.
• Access study site by boat from Key River marina on Hwy. 69 to Lake Huron and along the Key River.
• Participate in remote camping along Lake Huron shoreline as part of a two- or three-person team.
• Plan out personal menu for 5 day and 2-day remote camping trips and prepare and store food in bear country.
• Prepared for and handle both cold and hot weather extremes of May and June.
• Walk 8-10 hours a day in rocky, hilly, and wet bush conditions to record data.
• Learn to identify birds by sight and song and learn about various organisms from spiders to mammals and vegetation species. Have the apps iNaturalist and Merlin on your phone and knowledge of how to use them.
• Collect structural data on vegetation, including measuring small trees and bushes.
• Enter data into a spreadsheet on an iPad and take notes on your phone or paper.
• Responsibility to download data/notes to appropriate platform without reminders.

Minimum Qualifications

• Grade 12 completion or equivalent
• Ontario Class G License; Boater's License an advantage but not critical
• Experience operating all-terrain vehicles,
• Transportation to and from Key River Marina for remote field work access.
• Willing to access study site by boat from Key River marina on Hwy. 69 to Lake Huron and along the Key River during late May to late July, up to 40 hours a week
• Participate in remote camping along Lake Huron shoreline as part of a two- or three-person team. Camping equipment available and not necessary to have your own.
• Plan out personal menu for 5 day and 2-day remote camping trips and prepare and store food in bear country.
• Prepared for and handle both cold mornings and hot afternoon weather extremes of May and June. Start the day at 4:30 am, finish by early afternoon.
• Walk 8-10 hours a day in rocky, hilly, and wet bush conditions to record data.
• Willingness to identify birds by sight and song and learn about various organisms from spiders to mammals and vegetation species. Have the apps iNaturalist and Merlin on your phone and knowledge of how to use them.
• Collect structural data on vegetation, including measuring small trees and bushes.
• Responsibility to download data/notes to appropriate platform without reminders.
• Proper clothing for weather extremes (including raincoat, rubber boots, hiking boots, hat for strong sun) and bushwalking.
• Good physical conditions: Non-smoker (chain smokers not preferred).
• Comfortable with remote camping in personal tents and tolerant of biting insects with minimal bug repellant use.
• Access to binoculars (loaner can be arranged)
• Comfortable with navigation in the bush.
• Valid certifications such as standard First Aid are an asset, but are not required in advance of filling the position and can be pursued after hiring, if required
• Ability to work in a positive and team-oriented environment
• Ability to use computers and Microsoft office (Word, Excel)
• Ability to work and communicate effectively with all staff, community members and stakeholders
• Preference will be given to HIFN members, neighbouring First Nation communities and First Nation applicants.
