Let's help you launch your career with Alberta Veterinary Laboratories (“AVL/Solvet”)! We are looking for an energetic and dedicated Payroll Specialist – 20 Month Maternity Leave Coverage to join our team on-site in our Calgary facility working 40 hours/week (Monday - Friday).
THE ROLE
Reporting to the Controller, the Payroll Specialist is responsible for accurate and timely processing of payroll for employees, compliance with federal and provincial regulations, and recording of payroll and related transactions.
The objective of this role is to safeguard company resources and facilitate employee satisfaction by ensuring correct compensation, resolution of discrepancies, and management of benefits, as well as timely recording and reporting thereof.
DAY-TO-DAY
- Accurately process bi-weekly and off-cycle payrolls for all salaried and hourly employees.
- Calculate wages, bonuses, overtime, benefits, allowances and deductions.
- Handle payroll discrepancies, investigate errors, and resolve employee payroll-related inquiries, and concerns.
- Ensure compliance with federal and provincial employment regulations, tax laws, including CPP/QPP, EI, and income tax deductions, as they exist and evolve.
- Prepare and submit payroll-related remittances, including but not limited to PD7A's, T4s, T4As, and Records of Employment (ROEs).
- Administer and monitor compliance with Company policies and ensure compliance with all applicable laws.
- Assist with onboarding new employees.
- Health benefit, and savings program management and administration.
- Maintain payroll systems and update employee information and records as required.
- Prepare accounting entries to record payroll, reconcile and clear payroll related accounts, and prepare reports for management.
- Coordinate with HR and finance teams on employee status changes, benefits, and compensation adjustments.
- Conduct regular audits of payroll processes and resolve discrepancies.
- Recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency, clarity and accuracy.
- Finalize the implementation of the UKG payroll system, co-ordinate/assist as required on implementation of the UKG HR modules and ensure the payroll system is used effectively.
- Conduct regular audits of vendors to ensure cost efficiency, and best practices and services are maintained.
- Long term, this role has the potential to evolve into supporting either the accounting or human resources departments with various tasks.
- Other duties and special projects as required.

IDEAL FIT
Education & Experience
- Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification from the Canadian Payroll Association (NPI)
- UKG HRIS experience
- 5+ years' experience in full cycle payroll
- System implementation experience is an asset
- Strong knowledge of best practices and process improvement ability
- US Payroll experience is an asset
Skills and Attributes
- Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, multi-tasking ability, and ability to deliver results under time constraints
- Self-starter with experience managing functions and training team members in a fast-paced environment
