Let's help you launch your career with Solvet! We are looking for an energetic and dedicated Controller to join our team on-site in our Calgary facility working 40 hours/week (Monday - Friday).

THE ROLE

The Controller is responsible for accurate, relevant, and timely information and analysis of the financial performance of Solvet. This manager monitors internal controls, proactively improves processes, manages the accounting team, reports to external parties on behalf of the company, manages external audits, and performs other ad-hoc projects.

The objective of this role is to ensure compliance with accounting regulations, provide strategic guidance to enhance the company's financial performance, and mentor the accounting team.

DAY-TO-DAY

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and develop a high-performing accounting team, ensuring efficiency and accuracy in all accounting related functions and processes, including transaction processing and financial reporting.
  • Supervise and mentor the accounting team, developing professional growth paths and objectives for each team member.
  • Work to ensure talent development and retention over time.

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Provide timely, accurate financial information, metrics, and qualitative information to management, shareholders, auditors, and other parties, including in compliance with regulatory and contractual requirements
  • Manage multiple entities with intercompany transactions, multiple currencies, and consolidation requirements.
  • Ensure all accounts are reconciled and updated at least monthly.
  • Prepare and analyze financial reporting packages.
  • Ensure compliance with provincial and federal regulatory requirements, legislation, taxation regulations in all jurisdictions where the company operates, and professional standards.
  • Coordinate with external auditors for financial audits, SR&ED tax claim preparation, and annual tax filings.

Budgeting & Financial Planning

  • Lead the budgeting and forecasting process in collaboration with General Counsel and department heads.
  • Monitor budget vs. actual performance, prepare management reports, and analyze variances to identify cost-saving opportunities, trends, performance gaps, and opportunities.
  • Assist in developing long-term financial planning strategies to support business growth.

Financial Analysis & Performance Optimization

  • Develop and monitor key financial metrics and performance indicators.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.
  • Develop financial analysis tools.
  • Analyze and improve production and inventory management and accounting. Optimize use of the ERP system for costing and record-keeping.
  • Ensure proper allocation and management of labour, materials, factory overhead, and SG&A costs.

Cash Flow & Asset Management

  • Manage cash flow and ensure the company maintains adequate liquidity.
  • Optimize working capital and oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Monitor, develop and evolve banking relationships, prepare reports to financial institutions and assist in oversight of financing strategies.

Internal Controls & Risk Management

  • Implement and maintain a system of internal controls and efficient processes to safeguard assets, resources, intellectual property, and information. Including to ensure the integrity and real-time accuracy of financial data.
  • Develop and maintain guidelines, policies, and procedures for budgeting, accounting, cash and credit management, administration, and other activities.
  • Manage the accuracy and productivity of day-to-day financial activities.
  • Keep the General Counsel informed on risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Assist in risk management and reporting related to insurance coverage.

Other Responsibilities

  • Strive to constantly improve efficiency and utilization of the ERP and other electronic tools.
  • Build models and templates to support ad-hoc and regular reporting requests.
  • Handle special projects and ad hoc financial initiatives to support organizational goals.
  • Other duties as required.

IDEAL FIT

Education & Experience

  • CPA or CMA designation, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years experience in accounting and financial management
  • 5+ years of team management experience
  • Experience with Acumatica is considered an asset
  • Minimum 5+ years experience in a manufacturing environment; inventory experience in a retail environment is beneficial

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, multi-tasking ability, and ability to delivery results under time constraints
  • Self-starter with experience managing functions and training team members in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to meet prioritized deadlines in a diversified company
