As an Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community members. You will lead efforts in risk assessment, emergency planning, training, collaboration, and response and recovery. Reporting directly to the Lands Manager, your work will help build a resilient community that is prepared for any emergency.

What You'll Do:

Emergency Preparedness

  • Conduct regular risk assessments to identify community hazards and vulnerabilities.
  • Develop and maintain emergency preparedness plans tailored to community needs and risks.
  • Ensure procedures and policies are current and effective.
  • Develop mitigation strategies based on risk assessments.
  • Ensure the availability and readiness of emergency supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain and update resource materials for emergency preparedness plans and programs.
  • Promote public education on emergency preparedness and safety.
  • Participate in the KFN Joint Health and Safety Committee as a co-chair and employee representative.

Training and Education

  • Conduct training sessions and workshops on emergency procedures, safety protocols, and disaster response for community members, staff, healthcare professionals, and public safety agency staff.
  • Facilitate safety and evacuation meetings and drills.
  • Promote public education on emergency preparedness and safety.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Establish and maintain effective communication channels for disseminating emergency information and updates to community members.
  • Coordinate activities of various groups and agencies.
  • Collaborate with Pitt Meadows, Surrey, and Langley Emergency Response Teams.
  • Consult with local and regional governments to assess needs and capacities.
  • Maintain relationships with emergency services, public safety agencies, and relevant organizations.

Response and Recovery

  • Lead and coordinate emergency response efforts during incidents to protect community members.
  • Support project teams with the implementation of the emergency response plan.
  • Document details of emergencies, response efforts, and outcomes.
  • Develop and implement recovery plans to help the community rebuild and return to normalcy after an emergency.

What you bring to Katzie:

  • Experience, both lived and professional, equivalent to the knowledge obtained through a 4-year bachelors degree program in Emergency Management, Public Safety, or a related field.
  • Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) or equivalent certification is an asset.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience in conducting risk assessments and developing emergency preparedness plans.
  • Experience working in a First Nations community or with Indigenous organizations.
  • Knowledge of local, regional, and national emergency management regulations and standards.
  • Outstanding organizational abilities, adept at prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Strong capability to maintain high confidentiality and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Adobe and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and expertise levels.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills, including building relationships, mediating, and solving conflicts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining complex information in simple terms for different audiences.
  • Works well both independently and as part of a team, using good judgment to complete tasks.
  • Strong project management skills with a proven track record of successful project delivery.
  • Proficiency in emergency response procedures and protocols.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training programs.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
  • Strong commitment to public safety and community well-being.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and environments.

Other Requirements

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector).
  • Class 5 Drivers License with a clean drivers abstract.
  • A willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, if required by events.
