My client is a specialized environmental consultancy operating at the intersection of regulatory strategy, Indigenous engagement, and community-centered impact assessment. 100% Canadian-owned and operated, the firm is known for its collaborative, solutions-focused approach to complex environmental and socio-economic challenges across Canada's resource, infrastructure, and energy sectors. With deep expertise in environmental assessments and permitting, they support clients through critical project milestones—building trust with regulators, Indigenous Nations, and communities along the way.
I am seeking a skilled and strategic Senior Socio-Economic Specialist to lead and deliver high-quality socio-cultural and socio-economic assessments, with a strong focus on Indigenous engagement and community impact. This role is ideal for a senior practitioner who thrives on meaningful, outcomes-based work, and who is passionate about shaping inclusive, culturally respectful practices that support sustainable development and community well-being.
Remote / WFH / Hybrid: 100% Remote anywhere in British Columbia
Travel: Minimal
Salary: $120k - $150k , plus health benefits, RRSP matching, annual bonuses (The final salary will reflect the qualifications, relevant experience, expertise, and professional designations that each candidate brings to the role. Individuals who offer additional strengths or bring exceptional value to the team will be considered for compensation beyond the stated range, as our client recognizes and rewards unique contributions.)
Responsibilities:

  • Lead cross-functional teams to design and deliver socio-economic components of environmental assessments, including Indigenous engagement, community studies, and impact mitigation strategies.
  • Generate high-trust relationships with Indigenous communities and stakeholders through respectful, transparent, and continuous engagement practices.
  • Deliver high-quality socio-cultural and socio-economic baseline studies using qualitative and quantitative research—interviews, surveys, desktop review, and community-led knowledge gathering.
  • Evaluate and translate social trends, cultural knowledge, and economic data into clear, actionable insight for clients and regulators.
  • Develop robust impact management programs—including mitigation, monitoring, and benefit enhancement measures—that reflect Indigenous and community priorities.
  • Stay ahead of regulatory changes, providing internal briefings, peer training, and strategy updates on new policies, evolving consultation requirements, and best practices.
  • Mentor and lead a team of Indigenous Engagement and Permitting Coordinators, fostering technical excellence and culturally respectful approaches.
  • Ensure all deliverables exceed expectations, from proposal scope and budgets to technical reports, by applying strong quality standards and time management.

Deliverables:

  • Regulatory-ready technical reports (socio-economic and socio-cultural components) that meet or exceed IAAC, BCEAO, and CER standards
  • Work plans and cost estimates that demonstrate value to clients while respecting community timelines and protocols
  • Consistent, high-quality project execution across multiple concurrent files
  • Internal knowledge-sharing on cultural competency, reconciliation, decolonization, and consultation best practices

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience leading socio-economic or socio-cultural assessments within environmental assessments or major project contexts
  • Proven leadership in working with Indigenous Nations, regulators, proponents, and community stakeholders
  • Advanced knowledge of Canadian regulatory processes (IAAC, BCEAO, CER, etc.) and relevant acts and policies (e.g., UNDRIP, Impact Assessment Act, TRC Calls to Action).
  • Familiar with the socio-cultural impacts of natural resource development and traditional land use practices
  • Strong writer and communicator—able to synthesize data, translate complex concepts, and facilitate engagement with empathy and clarity
  • Skilled in project and time management; known for delivering under pressure with minimal oversight
  • Passionate about Indigenous cultures, reconciliation, and supporting decolonized approaches to development
  • Willing to travel to project locations and community engagement sessions as required.
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in sociology, Indigenous studies, economics, planning, geography, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Nice to Have:

  • Prior experience in mining, infrastructure or renewable energy projects
  • Experience leading Indigenous Knowledge studies or community-based research
  • Fluency in French or an Indigenous language is an asset

As a Senior Socio-Economic Specialist, you will do more than assess impacts—you'll lead the conversation on how resource and infrastructure projects can leave lasting, positive legacies for Indigenous Nations, local communities, and regional economies. You will guide clients through evolving provincial and federal legislation, deliver actionable insights for project approvals, and mentor a growing team of engagement professionals.
