Who We Are

The Mikisew Cree First Nation (Mikisew) has lived on the ancestral lands of the Athabasca Delta and Wood Buffalo National Park in northeastern Alberta since time immemorial. The lives of our members are linked to the land and to a close understanding of traditions, history and a natural way of life. Many of our members live in the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan, and our traditional lands range over a large portion of Athabasca oil sands deposits. For nearly 30 years,Mikisew Group, our wholly owned business arm, has worked toward the long-term, sustainable economic progress of our Nation and its members through employment and significant investments in education, training, social programs and infrastructure.

Who You Are

Reporting to the Director of Education/Principle, the Alberta's Future Leaders Program Mentor is responsible for delivering a summer youth program in Fort Chipewyan, AB. Youth will be engaged through sport, recreation, leadership, and cultural activities, facilitated by both a local and an external mentor. This position involves creating and leading meaningful experiences for youth throughout the community.

This is a full-time, temporary summer student position based in Fort Chipewyan, AB.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Be employed by from approximately May 4 -August 29, 2025
• Organize and coordinate daily sport, recreation, leadership and cultural activities with a fellow mentor
• Deliver engaging and purposeful programming that responds to community needs
• Align programming to Arctic Sport & Dene Games in support of the Arctic Winter Games and other programs
• Fulfill AFL program requirements and host community expectations
• Promote active and healthy lifestyles
• Build strong relationships with youth and community

Qualifications

• Standard First Aid and CPR Certification
• A criminal record check with vulnerable sector check
• Previous experience in;
• working with youth
• planning, organizing, and implementing sport, recreation, leadership or cultural programs
• creating safe and welcoming environments
• working independently and as part of a team
• Demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Self-motivated, creative, adaptive and flexible problem-solving skills
• Experience with conflict resolution and working in demanding situations
• Knowledge of self-care strategies and healthy coping mechanisms
• Enrollment in a relevant post-secondary program: Native Studies, Physical Education, Recreation, Education, Social Work, Child/Youth Care, or related fields
• Class 4 or 5 Drivers License
• Personal Vehicle
• Mental Health First Aid Training / Trauma Informed Care
• Suicide Awareness Training
