They are seeking a dedicated and experienced paralegal to join their team. This role presents an exciting opportunity for a skilled professional with 3-5 years of experience in criminal law-preferably within a criminal law firm-to play a key role in their practice and contribute meaningfully to their clients' legal matters.
Role Overview
As a Paralegal, you will provide essential support to our legal team in all aspects of criminal law practice. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Strong common sense, sound judgment, and the ability to anticipate needs and proactively address challenges are critical to success in this role.
Key Responsibilities
· Open and manage private client files, gather relevant documentation, and liaise with Crown Counsel, other law firms, and various community organizations to facilitate seamless case management.
· Demonstrate strong proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), RCS (Remote Courtroom Scheduling), E-Disclosure, Adjournment Digital Service, TMS (Transcript Management Service), and Adobe Reader.
· Oversee file progression by obtaining necessary documents and managing the Early Case Resolution process to ensure timely and effective case resolutions.
· Manage the firm's calendar, schedule appointments, court dates, and maintain diarized files to ensure an organized workflow.
· Assist with client intake by responding to inquiries via email and telephone, addressing both routine and complex matters in a timely and professional manner.
· Apply extensive experience in trial preparation to ensure all required materials and documentation are thoroughly prepared for court proceedings.
· Maintain and update the firm's website, www.snukal-law.com, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information and resources.
· Uphold the highest standards of confidentiality regarding firm, client, and employee information, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
· Assist lawyers in preparing legal documents, including court filings, affidavits, and disclosure reviews, ensuring accuracy and adherence to legal requirements.
· Coordinate and schedule client meetings, aligning availability with the legal team's commitments.
· Organize and maintain client files and case records, both electronically and physically, ensuring accessibility and accuracy.
· Draft professional correspondence and communicate effectively with clients, court staff, and other stakeholders to facilitate efficient case management.
· Monitor critical deadlines and ensure timely submission of required documentation to meet legal and procedural obligations.
· Perform administrative duties such as processing invoices, ordering office supplies, and liaising with property management to address office-related matters.
Qualifications
· Completion of a recognized Legal Assistant, Paralegal, or Law Clerk program, with preference given to graduates from SAIT.
· A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in criminal law, ideally within a sole practitioner criminal law firm.
· Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, with keen attention to detail.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal document management software.
· Familiarity with Alberta's legal system and criminal procedures is considered an asset.
· Proven ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a team environment.
