The Controller will be responsible for the financial reporting, internal controls and accounting activities of the Association and will have direct, hands-on responsibility for financial activity within the accounting department. The incumbent will oversee the department staff, as well as the bi- weekly processing of payroll. The Controller is responsible for the overall management and day-to-day control of the Accounting department.

This is a 14-month contract position.

Our team is currently working on a hybrid schedule (2 days in the office, 3 days from home). This may change based on operational needs.

Responsibilities include:

Train, provide direction and motivate team of 6 staff members

Ensure completeness and accuracy of periodic account reconciliations and financial activity.

Take a lead role in the preparation of the annual budget and maintain ongoing analysis of budget variances and financial forecasting, including timely communication to those with budget responsibility each month.

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for management and internal users, including detailed analysis of variances year over year, and actuals to budget.

Take a lead role in the month end, quarter end and year end close process on a tight deadline

Manage the daily operations of the accounting department (Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Accounting and all accounting operations)

Recommend and direct implementation of improvements and enhancements to existing financial practices and policies

Posting of journal entries prepared by staff and integration of databases to the GL

Review and sign off on all balance sheet account reconciliations

Coordinate year-end audit with external auditors and take the lead in the preparation of audit schedules, data and information

Process bi-weekly payroll for approximately 45 staff.

Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director, Finance

Knowledge/Skills Required:

CPA, member in good standing

8-10 years accounting experience, minimum of 5 years of experience in a management role

Solid knowledge and understanding of full cycle accounting, financial statements, budgeting/forecasting, year-end functions

FP&A knowledge and experience an asset

Accomplished self-starter, confident and able to work independently

Leadership, supervisory and communications skills

Demonstrated organizational skills with strong attention to detail

Sound judgment, tact, discretion, diplomacy and professionalism

Proficient in Microsoft Office (specifically Excel, Word and Powerpoint)

Knowledge of iMIS database, GP Dynamics, MS Dynamics (Business Central), Applied EPIC and previous experience in a complex not-for- profit or insurance brokerage environment an asset

Exceptional verbal, written and presentation skills are required

Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail

Proactive and enthusiastic, self-starter

Experience in not for profit and/or financial services sectors is an asset

Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team
