JOB SUMMARY:

Sagamok Anishnawbek is seeking a dedicated and visionary Director of Community Justice to lead the development and management of our justice-related programs and services. This leadership role is responsible for the strategic direction, implementation, and oversight of all aspects of Sagamoks justice systems including policing, law enforcement, prosecution, alternative dispute resolution, and community safety initiatives.

This position requires a deep understanding of both federal and provincial justice legislation and a commitment to integrating traditional Anishnawbek values and approaches into justice programming. The Director will build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, community members, and external partners to support justice, safety, and healing for our community.

KEY RESPONISIBILITIES:


Strategic Leadership & Planning

  • Develop and implement long-range strategic plans for community justice systems.
  • Conduct needs assessments and facilitate data collection to support informed decision-making.
  • Collaborate with leadership, community working groups, and committees to define and reach department goals.
  • Lead community readiness assessments and justice authority negotiations.

Program & Policy Development

  • Oversee the planning and delivery of justice services aligned with Sagamok Laws and By-Laws.
  • Develop and evaluate policies using restorative justice principles.
  • Implement programs addressing victim services, child welfare, and conflict resolution.
  • Design and monitor community safety and crime prevention initiatives.

Financial Management

  • Prepare, manage, and report on operational and capital budgets.
  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities to sustain and expand services.
  • Ensure financial accountability through regular reporting to funders and leadership.

Human Resources & Operations

  • Lead and mentor a skilled team to deliver high-quality justice services.
  • Evaluate team performance and provide opportunities for capacity building.
  • Promote innovation and continuous improvement across all operational areas.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Work with internal departments and external partners including Anishinabek Police Services, courts, and correctional services.
  • Represent Sagamok Anishnawbek at justice-related events, forums, and with key stakeholders.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to Council, the community, and funding bodies.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must provide a clear Criminal Records Check (CPIC) that is valid within 6 months
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with Sagamok Anishnawbek policies
  • Must have and maintain a valid Ontario drivers License and have access to a vehicle for on-the-job use with appropriate liability insurance
  • Position is subject to six months probation

QUALIFICATIONS:


Education & Experience

  • Post-secondary degree in Law, Justice, Criminology, or related field (equivalencies may be considered).
  • 35 years of progressive leadership experience in justice or related sectors.
  • Experience in Indigenous law-making, policy development, and strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community and restorative justice practices.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of Canadian justice legislation, including Criminal Code, YCJA, and Child and Family Services laws.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous governance structures and historical context (e.g., residential schools, colonial impacts).
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, manage external consultants, and resolve conflicts.
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe language is considered an asset.
