Job Description

The Matte Painter creates photo realistic and stylized environments in 2D and 2.5D using matte painting techniques.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create photo-realistic and stylized backgrounds and environments in 2D and 2.5D;
  • Develop concepts and photographic elements as references or images for projects;
  • Complete asset creation in 2D and 2.5D;
  • Support sequences, determining the best methodology;
  • May participate in the development of tools and techniques for the department;
  • Perform quality control on work before it is submitted for review/approval, ensuring all technical and creative standards are met, and promptly apply notes received;
  • Keep Production and the project team informed of the status of work, issues to be resolved, ramifications of problems encountered and recommend potential solutions;
  • Ensure deadlines are met, advising the project team promptly if delays could be expected.
Qualifications
  • Experience in a similar position, within the VFX;
  • Must be proficient with Maya, Nuke, and Photoshop;
  • Strong artistic abilities in drawing and 2D painting;
  • Excellent eye for detail and ability to produce photorealistic work;
  • Solid understanding of photography principles;
  • Strong knowledge of camera projection techniques;
  • Experience with modeling, texturing, surfacing, and lighting assets;
  • Familiarity with Blender, Houdini, or Terragen is considered an asset;
  • Excellent sense of prioritization and ability to meet tight deadlines.

Additional Information
  • On-site role at the Toronto office;
  • Temporary contract from April 21 to June 6 2025 with potential extension.
