Job Description:
AltaLink's Project Engineering team is currently looking to fill the role of Manager of Project Engineering reporting to the Director of Engineering, Project Development. The successful candidate will lead a technical team who are responsible for ensuring that all new transmission facilities are appropriately integrated into AltaLink's high voltage transmission system. This is an excellent development opportunity for a Professional Engineer with strong technical and leadership capabilities.
Responsibilities:
- Providing strong leadership, direction and support to a team of technical professionals who are responsible for:
- Identifying alternative project concepts to interconnect new customers and resolve power system issues.
- Analyzing project concepts, using a wide variety of power system analytical techniques & tools, to determine their compliance to ISO Planning criteria and expected performance.
- Performing power system studies to support the development of project execution plans.
- Performing power system studies to properly specify transmission facilities.
- Liaising with the AESO Planning team in support of the AESO with regional plans.
- Developing and coordinating project scoping documents to allow accurate estimating and clear direction to internal design teams design teams and contractors.
- Assisting with the development of project execution strategy.
- Providing technical direction and answering questions from customers, internal designers and contractors.
- Reviewing drawings and specifications to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability and safety.
- Liaising with internal departments to resolve technical and project issues.
- Manage staffing levels and development to meet an ever-changing project workload.
- Note: Manager may have a requirement to take on the occasional project and associated work in cases of workload constraints.
- Continuously review Project Engineering processes & practices to improve the delivery of AltaLink projects.
- Interface with industry, AESO, other utilities and stakeholders, as a leader to influence and shape direction on behalf of AltaLink and our customers.
- Review compliance controls, processes and procedures for the implementation of ISO Rules and Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) to ensure AltaLink has a strong compliance performance.
- Set team goals and metrics (KPIs) for performance measurement and reporting to senior management
- Lead performance reviews and develop employee training plans
- Perform the duties of a Responsible Member as outlined in AltaLink' s Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP).
Requirements
- University degree in electrical engineering, with a minimum of 10 years of experience in the electric utility industry.
- Professional Engineer in good standing with APEGA.
- Project experience particularly with respect to power system studies and analysis, customer connections and power system operations.
- Proven ability/experience in the above responsibilities.
- Broad understanding of electric transmission utility technology, operation & maintenance and business.
- A detailed understanding of transmission line, telecommunication, SCADA, P&C and substation equipment and their integration would be an asset.
- Good understanding of AESO's connection process.
- Knowledge of Altalink's project delivery model, design processes and role of Owners Engineer would be an asset.
- Excellent problem solver coupled with a proven ability to lead groups involved in fast paced, high-pressure environments.
- Experience with scoping distributed generation, BTF, renewable (wind/solar) and system projects.
- Demonstrated ability to take a leadership role for resolving technical issues.
- Strong interpersonal skills complimented by strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to work with, build and manage relationships with external customers (e.g. Fortis, AESO, connecting customers).
- Effective interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive outcomes.
- Valid class 5 driver's license.
- Proven track record of good performance and attendance.
