Family Services Community Services Worker
Neighbour to Neighbour Centre, Hamilton, ON

SUMMARY OF ROLE
Working with participants experiencing income insecurity seeking supports from the various programs in the Family Services Department. Determining customer eligibility to these programs, completing applications, assisting participants to navigate N2N programs, and to navigate community programs addressing income insecurity, health and social support. Assist with data collection and administration of program survey.

POSITION DETAILS
NOTE: Positions are dependent on confirmation of Service Canada, Canada Summer Jobs funding. Therefore, the term length may vary and is subject to change.

  • Position term: 450 hours over 15 weeks
  • Employment start date: May 5, 2025
  • Hours of work: 30 hours/week
  • Wage rate per hour: $21:30

ELIGIBILITY NOTES
These positions are available pending funding through Service Canada, Canada Summer Jobs, which requires that all intern applicants:

  • Can complete the full hours before August 30, 2025.
  • Are between 15 and 30 years of age;
  • Are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  • Are legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Some post-secondary education (BSW, SSW or equivalent program)
  • Experience working with people
  • Current police clearance

SKILLS

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Dependable.
  • Empathy and understanding, non-judgmental.
  • Creative thinking and ability to troubleshoot complicated situations.
  • Experience with Excel spreadsheets and data entry.
  • Proficiency in another language is an asset.
  • Experience working with persons whose first language is not English is an asset.
  • Experience working with persons with mental health needs, addiction and/or developmental needs are an asset.
  • Basic math skills are essential to this position (+, -, , ).
  • Knowledge of/ability to interpret income related documents including: NOAs, bank statements, OW statements, ODSP statements, OAS, CPP/D, WSIB statements, T slips is essential.
  • Knowledge of programs and services that serve to address income and housing insecurity is an asset.
  • Ability to lift and carry 30 lbs
  • Ability to stand for periods up to 3 hour

DUTIES

  • Keep monthly statistics and reports.
  • Ensure that applications and documentation are completed for each file.
  • Accept, make, and return phone calls.
  • Triage and prioritize applicants seeking assistance.
  • Book appointments.
  • Assess utility disconnection and eviction risk.
  • Assess applicant eligibility and make recommendations for grant distribution.
  • Link applicants with community services and support services that they may require.
  • Be prepared to assist with foodbank client intake and service when necessary.
  • Support implementation of program survey for Family Services and Emergency Food.
