Job Description

The AWS SysOps Engineer is responsible for the deployment, automation, monitoring, and support of AWS cloud infrastructure across the full lifecycle of applications and services. This role blends traditional system administration with DevOps practices to ensure highly available, scalable, and secure cloud environments. The SysOps Engineer collaborates with development, operations, and security teams to implement infrastructure as code, streamline CI/CD pipelines, and maintain performance and reliability of AWS-hosted systems.

Reporting to the Associate Director, IT, AWS Operations Lead, you will:

  • Design, deploy, manage, and operate scalable, highly available, and fault-tolerant systems on AWS.

  • Implement and manage infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as CloudFormation or Terraform.

  • Support the CI/CD lifecycle by managing and maintaining automated and reliable software deployment pipelines.

  • Monitor system health, performance, and availability using tools like DataDog and CloudWatch; configure alerts and develop dashboards.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure issues to ensure system stability, performance, and uptime.

  • Implement security fixes and remediate vulnerabilities identified by SecOps teams and tools such as Wiz, ensuring timely compliance with organizational security standards.

  • Manage AWS accounts, IAM roles, policies, and permissions in line with security and compliance standards.

  • Implement and manage backup strategies and disaster recovery procedures to ensure data protection and business continuity.

  • Participate in projects aimed at improving, modernizing, or expanding AWS-hosted systems and services.

  • Coordinate with third-party vendors and service providers during support and project-related activities.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation, including infrastructure diagrams, procedures, and runbooks.

Qualifications

You Have:

  • 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience working with AWS cloud services in a production environment.

  • 5 to 10 years of overall experience in IT infrastructure, system administration, or cloud operations roles.

Functional/Technical Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • AWS Cloud: Proven experience provisioning, operating, and maintaining systems across core AWS services such as EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, and VPC.

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Skilled in using Terraform to build, manage, and version infrastructure in a scalable and consistent manner.

  • Containers & Orchestration: Hands-on experience with Docker and Amazon EKS (Kubernetes) for containerized application management and orchestration.

  • CI/CD & Automation: Strong background in implementing and maintaining GitLab CI/CD pipelines to support automated build, test, and deployment workflows.

  • Monitoring & Observability: Proficient with tools like DataDog and CloudWatch for monitoring infrastructure, setting up alerting, and ensuring performance visibility.

  • Operating Systems: Administration of both Red Hat Linux and Windows Server environments in production.

  • Networking: Solid understanding of core networking principles, including DNS, TCP/IP, DHCP, firewalls, and VPNs.

  • Scripting & Automation: Proficient in automation and scripting using Bash, PowerShell, and Python.

  • Backup & Recovery: Experience with AWS Backup, Azure Backup, and cloud-based recovery solutions.

  • Security & Compliance: Strong knowledge of cloud security best practices, vulnerability remediation, and data protection, including integration with security platforms such as Wiz.

  • Familiarity with Azure and Office 365 environments is a plus, though not required for the role.

Relevant certifications are desirable, including:

  • AWS Certified SysOps Administrator

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect

  • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional

  • HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate

  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)

  • ITIL Certified is an asset
