JOB SUMMARY:

The Health and Safety Specialist is tasked with developing, implementing, and maintaining Sagamoks Health & Safety program. This role collaborates with all departments to ensure employee engagement, promote a culture of continuous improvement, and maintain compliance across the organization.

The specialist is responsible for raising awareness of workplace risks and implementing measures to protect employees from hazards, including physical and psychological injuries, occupational illnesses, and property damage.
POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and Implement Safety Programs: Design and maintain health and safety policies and programs that meet Sagamoks standards and regulatory requirements.
Compliance Monitoring: Ensure adherence to local, provincial, and federal health and safety laws, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Stay updated on changes in legislation and industry standards.
Risk Assessments: Conduct hazard assessments and assist managers in developing risk mitigation strategies for safe operations at job sites.
Site Inspections: Perform site inspections and audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards, providing recommendations for corrective actions as needed.
Training & Education: Organize and lead safety training sessions for employees, ensuring all team members are knowledgeable about safety protocols and emergency procedures. Incorporate safety training into new employee orientations.
Health & Safety Database Maintenance: Administer and audit the internal training portal, Citation Atlas, tracking employee safety certifications and ensuring centralized storage of health and safety data.
WSIB and Return-to-Work Programs: Assist with WSIB claim submissions and collaborate with management and injured employees on light duty return-to-work programs.
Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee: Manage the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC), providing resources and ensuring compliance with administrative requirements.
Incident Reporting & Investigation: Lead investigations of workplace incidents, documenting findings and collaborating with management to implement corrective actions.
Safety Documentation: Maintain accurate records of safety training, inspections, certifications, and incident reports, ensuring accessibility for audits.
3rd Party Compliance: Ensure compliance with external health and safety providers regarding training services and equipment.
Emergency Response Preparedness: Develop and update emergency response plans, including evacuation routes and first aid procedures.
Continuous Improvement: Work with management to enhance the companys safety culture by identifying trends and proposing solutions.
Safety Equipment and PPE: Oversee the use, maintenance, and replacement of personal protective equipment (PPE) across job sites.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Must hold or be willing to secure a First Aid/CPR Certificate.
Strong investigative skills and attention to detail are required.
Valid drivers license and vehicle for on-the-job use.
Flexibility to work hours on short notice.
Knowledge of Anishnawbek history, practices, teachings, language, values, and beliefs is required.
Ability to build rapport with employees across organizational sites.
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
A Criminal Records Check is required prior to employment.
Subject to a six-month probation period.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field is preferred.
Minimum of three years experience in occupational health and safety.
Preferred safety designations include Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP).
Strong asset: Safety certification training (e.g., incident investigation, JHSC, WHMIS 2015, first aid/CPR).
Expert knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and workers' compensation legislation.
Strong leadership skills to influence and motivate a positive safety culture.
Experience with Safety Management Database systems.
Strong English communication skills (verbal and written).
