Job Overview:
As a Senior Software Engineering Manager, you lead engineering teams that build and operate systems at meaningful scale and impact. In this role, you may directly manage engineers, manage managers, or both depending on the shape and evolution of your organization. You are accountable for the success of your teams, the quality of their output, and the growth of the individuals within them.
Youre a strategic partner to product, design, and business leads, helping shape roadmaps and translating priorities into plans that your teams can execute confidently. You excel at leading through others not just by providing direction, but by creating the right mechanisms to ensure consistent quality, accountability, and visibility. Whether youre designing how the team plans its work, how it runs reviews, or how incidents are handled, you invest in the operational frameworks that lead to sustainable, high-quality outcomes.
As a senior leader, youre expected to raise the bar not only for your teams, but across the organization. You help define and evolve engineering culture, scale leadership practices, and mentor both engineers and managers. Youre not just shipping software youre building the people, structures, and systems that make continuous improvement possible.
What youll do:
- Lead multiple teams, with management responsibilities that may include engineers and engineering managers.
- Define and evolve technical and product strategy in partnership with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Drive execution by implementing and continuously improving planning, delivery, and quality mechanisms.
- Ensure your teams uphold engineering excellence through structured code reviews, architecture design processes, testing strategies, and operational playbooks.
- Foster an inclusive and growth-oriented environment where engineers and managers can thrive.
- Own the operational health of your systems, including observability, reliability, and incident management.
- Mentor engineering managers and senior engineers, supporting their growth and succession planning.
- Contribute to org-level initiatives like hiring strategy, leveling, and cross-team collaboration models.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of engineering management experience, including managing at least one other manager.
- Proven track record of leading teams that deliver high-quality, scalable software systems.
- Strong ability to define and implement effective processes for planning, delivery, testing, and quality.
- Experience driving large initiatives that cut across product, engineering, and business functions.
- Comfortable operating in both strategic and tactical modes able to shift between architecture reviews and org design discussions.
- Strong coaching and communication skills; ability to influence across levels and disciplines.
