ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
This position will manage the pipefitters and production on the shop floor for internal and external refurbishment work to ensure schedules are adhered to and work is performed according to scope and customer expectations.
MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work in collaboration with the Manager, Production & Metal Fabrication
- Overseeing the work direction of unionized railway car technicians, electricians, pipefitters, production workers, cleaners, and support workers
- Coordinate and oversee pipefitters tasks and responsibilities and hold tailgates with direct reports.
- Deals directly with Coach Project personnel daily on the production floor to discuss process improvement ideas and any potential issues.
- Monitor, report and take action to correct or change work processes and/or methods as required to meet the schedule and/or budget.
- Follow up production schedules to ensure work is completed in accordance with customer contract obligations.
- Discuss daily operations with all supervisors.
- Maintain daily contact with the Sr. Manager of Operations to ensure production line tasks are assigned and completed as scheduled and corrective action is taken to prevent slippage.
- Re-assign staff as required to maintain refurbishment program schedules.
- Conduct daily safety observations and ensure direct reports complete same.
- Participates as a member of the Workplace Health and Safety Committee, including addressing issues brought up at WHSC meetings, including Intelex issues.
- Conduct monthly car shop inspection for WHSC.
- Work with supervisors to complete Intelex investigations, complete reports and submit through to approval stage.
- Work with supervisor to follow up on WSIB form 7 and schedule 1 and submit to H&S representative.
- Mentors and supports the learning and development of shop employees, production support staff, and supervisory team.
- Attend and participate in Production Status meetings, Lessons Learned sessions, and Production Team meetings (Supervisors and Managers).
- Oversee the supervisors and all employees on the shop floor in the absence of the Sr Manager of Operations.
- Assists in determining shop space, production line flow and equipment requirements to preform refurbishment programs.
- Meets with union representatives in dealing with collective agreement issues.
- Administers collective agreements including investigations, “Question and Answer” statements into alleged violations and recommends disciplinary action if appropriate.
- Assist in coordinating and lining up tasks for evenings and night shifts.
- Interact with project managers to determine project staffing requirements and resource leveling.
- Tour the shops continuously looking for potential safety or employee performance issues.
- Monitor and respond to production radio traffic and calls.
- Run and review reports to ensure all labour is properly allocated to appropriate program(s) and ensures any discrepancies are corrected promptly.
- Actively gather and contribute continuous improvements to increase efficiencies including inspiring staff to embrace a continuous improvement culture
- Assists with the preparation of Tender Submittals
REQUIREMENTS:
- College diploma in Manufacturing or Business Administration
- Certificate of qualification in one of the following trades: Automotive Service Technician 310S, Electrician - Construction and Maintenance 309A, Plumber 306A, Pipefitter 307A Heavy Duty Equipment Technician 421A, Railway Car Technician 268R or Millwright 433A is required
- Minimum 3 years of recent related work experience including but not limited to:
- managing and/or supervising a team of workers in a unionized environment
- managing change within an organization
- labour and employee relations and administration of collective agreements
- managing commercial operations
- project supervision
- managing departmental resources and budgets
- maintenance and repair of both passenger rail cars and freight rail cars
- Excellent working knowledge of computers and the Microsoft suite of products
- Effective communications skills (written, verbal and listening)
- Analytical thinker with great attention to detail and the ability to multi-task
- Ability to be flexible with outstanding organizational and planning skills
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to health and safety
