Nature and Scope
SOUTHLAND Transportation is currently seeking a full-time Safety Advisor for our Halifax operations. This salaried position plays a key role in supporting and advancing our safety culture by working closely with employees to promote awareness, prevent incidents, and ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards.

This position is based at our Burnside location and involves regular travel within the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Typical hours are based on an 8-hour day, with flexibility required for early starts (as early as 6:00 AM) and extended hours depending on incidents or safety discussions across locations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as a point of contact for employees regarding occupational health and safety concerns, questions, or suggestions.
- Promote and reinforce the company's safety program through in-person and virtual engagement.
- Assist the Safety & Training Manager in developing safety initiatives, conducting hazard analyses, and performing safety inspections to drive a proactive safety approach.
- Intervene and take appropriate action when health and safety risks are identified.
- Respond to and conduct investigations into workplace incidents.
- Complete administrative tasks such as writing investigation reports, inputting data into internal systems, tracking trends and statistics, creating safety presentations, and managing safety communications.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Formal education in Occupational Health and Safety.
- Knowledge of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act and related regulations.
- Familiarity with the NS Motor Vehicle Act or National Safety Code is considered an asset.
- A clean 5-year driver's abstract.
- Strong ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and foster a positive safety culture.
- Capable of working independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Experience in incident investigations, data analysis, and safety documentation.
- Strong hazard assessment skills, with the ability to recommend and implement effective safety controls.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and internal company systems.
- Willingness to introduce new safety strategies based on trends or recurring incidents.
- Interest in engaging with drivers in the field through regular safety talks and check-ins.
