Job Description
Welder/Fabricators are responsible for ensuring railcar equipment meet the standards for loading product, transportation, and travel on the rail network. Working in a dynamic, fast-paced, shop environment, welder / fabricators must work well individually and in teams to maximize efficiency and safety, while demonstrating innovation and a strong initiative and desire to produce a high-quality, safe for travel, rail product.
Roles & Responsibilities
The incumbents work in a team environment providing safe and effective railcar inspections, repair, and maintenance. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Perform repair, maintenance, and inspections on railcars and freight car equipment in accordance with industry standards
- Perform any cutting, burning, welding, grinding, soldiering, and brazing associated with the removal or application of components
- Perform all preventative maintenance work and repairs on trucks, underframe, structure, safety appliances, braking systems, and draft systems
- Complete the repair and application of all associated piping and valves, guards, shrouds, and covers
- Ensure all work associated with rush repairs, road work, and supplementary service operation equipment is completed quickly and efficiently
- Promptly address and report all safety concerns and equipment problems to the site designate
- Complete daily reports, daily logs, inspections and work reports and any other reports deemed necessary
- Exert “best effort” to protect human life, human safety and company property
- Participate in company developed training programs for railcar welders / fabricators and mechanics
Skills Knowledge & Abilities
- Possess a good mechanical aptitude, knowledge of railcar components considered an asset
- Oxy-fuel cutting
- Welds in flat, horizontal and vertical positions using a variety of weld processes
- Use hand and power tools and other equipment effectively and without injury
- Be physically fit including the ability to pull self up and down from railcars on a continuous basis and lift and carry 50 lbs; ability to work in confined spaces and at heights with appropriate restraints
- Ability to read blueprints, and understand general documentation; learn and use new technology
- Willing to work outdoors
Education & Experience
- Hold and maintain a valid class 5 driver's license
- Obtain forklift qualification through on site / in house training
- Experience operating various types of equipment an asset and willingness to learn industry specific equipment
- Tracking and/or knowledge of Rail Operating Rules considered an asset
- Railway background with welding experience considered an asset
- Excellent verbal, writing and reading comprehension
