We are Somerset West Community Health Centre (SWCHC), a non-profit, community-governed organization that serves over 18,000 clients annually. Established in 1978, SWCHC provides a wide range of health care services such as primary health care, health promotion, community development, mental health, and harm reduction. Job Summary
The Community House Coordinator works closely with residents of 280 Rochester St. and 865 Gladstone, as well as the surrounding community, to assess and respond to their needs based on regular feedback. This role involves coordinating programs, fostering community engagement, strengthening the capacity of both the Community House and its members, overseeing house administration, and recruiting and supervising program staff, students, and volunteers.
The ideal candidate will possess a clear understanding of issues of poverty and cultural sensitivity; is able to achieve a standard of excellence with work processes and outcomes; and requires a strong level of initiative and autonomy.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
Graduate degree from a recognized university in relevant discipline, or combination of undergraduate degree and related experience.
Strong relationship building and interpersonal skills
Experience working with individuals from differing social and cultural backgrounds and demonstrated ability in using an anti-racist and anti-oppressive approach
Demonstrated abilities in outreach and community engagement
A strong understanding of community development principles, and demonstrated ability to put these principles into action
Strong skills in proposal writing and report preparation
Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation
Experience in project and budget management
Experience working with marginalized populations
Experience in developing and maintaining partnerships
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong organizational skills
Sound judgement
Excellent interpersonal skills
Strong communication and writing skills
Ability to identify and manage program resources
Ability to offer support to project staff, volunteers and students
Knowledge of issues and challenges facing low income, vulnerable and diverse communities
A strong knowledge base of community development principles
Clear understanding of issues of poverty, and cultural sensitivity
Strong ability to work as a team member
Strong ability to work independently and develop own work structure
General knowledge of community resources
Regular hours of work are 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. Ability to work other hours which may include mornings, evenings and weekends
Advanced computer and internet skills
Language Capability
English, written and spoken, essential
French and other language(s) an asset
