Newcomer Connections is a crucial pillar within the YMCA family. Established in 1993, Y Newcomer Connections is a leading immigrant settlement Centre focused on creating connections that will transform our community into a lasting, healthy home for immigrants from around the world and from all walks of life.

The Opportunity

As a Settlement Counselor, you will play a vital role in helping newcomers to Canada navigate their journey toward building a new life. Your responsibilities will include conducting needs assessments, developing tailored settlement plans, and connecting clients with community resources. You will provide essential guidance and practical support, empowering clients to overcome the challenges of settling in a new country and achieve their goals. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. This position is part of the Newcomer Support Services Team and reports to the Settlement Counselor Team Lead and Settlement Supervisor.

The Responsibilities

  • Conduct needs assessments and develop tailored settlement plans for clients.
  • Manage ongoing client cases through scheduled meetings and follow-ups.
  • Connect newcomers with community services and opportunities.
  • Arrange appointments and provide necessary resources for clients.
  • Liaise with government agencies, healthcare providers, and other organizations on behalf of clients.
  • Maintain accurate data entry and report client activity to the Data Entry Clerk.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of information sessions.
  • Participate in client intake and collaborate with service teams.
  • Represent the YMCA at public events and build relationships with community groups.
  • Participate in relevant committees and complete quarterly reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Settlement Supervisor

Skills and qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution
  • Strong client-centric attitude with heightened sensitivity to the needs of immigrants.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, particularly with non-native English speakers.
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Must be fluent in the English language, knowledge of Ukrainian and/or Russian is an asset
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check
