Position Summary:

Position: Commercial Manager

Type: Full-time, Permanent

Location: Fort McKay Head Office

Schedule: 40-hour work week. Monday to Thursday, alternating Friday off.

Role Summary:


The Commercial Manageris responsible for leading the commercial aspects of project/contract execution, ensuring profitability, contract compliance, and strong client relationships. This role involves negotiating service agreements, managing cost controls, mitigating risks, and driving business growth in a highly competitive and regulated environment. The Commercial Manager will lead, coach and mentor a commercial team.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Contract & Commercial Management

  • Negotiate, manage, and administer contracts with major oil sands operators.
  • Ensure compliance with contract terms, change orders, and scope management.
  • Mitigate financial and operational risks associated with long-term service agreements.
  • Lead contract claims, dispute resolution, and settlement negotiations.

2. Project & Financial Performance

  • Oversee pricing strategies, project budgeting, and cost controls to maximize margins.
  • Work closely with operations teams to ensure project deliverables align with commercial objectives.
  • Analyze financial performance, including revenue forecasts and cash flow management.
  • Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising safety or quality.

3. Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key oil and gas clients.
  • Act as the primary commercial liaison between the company, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Ensure alignment between client expectations, service delivery, and contractual obligations.

4. Regulatory & Compliance Management

  • Ensure all commercial activities align with Albertas industry regulations, labor laws, and safety requirements (e.g., AER, OH&S, WCB).
  • Stay updated on oil sands regulations and contractual best practices to mitigate legal and financial risks.
  • Support compliance with Indigenous relations policies and local community engagement initiatives.

5. Business Development & Strategic Growth

  • Identify new opportunities for expansion within the Fort McMurray region, including RFPs and tenders.
  • Develop competitive bid proposals and support contract renewals.
  • Analyze market trends, competitor activity, and industry developments to maintain a competitive edge.

6. Strategic Planning:

  • Develop and implement commercial strategies to support the company's overall business objectives.

7. Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of Commercial Coordinators and a Senior Estimator.
  • Set clear performance expectations, provide coaching, and foster professional growth.
  • Ensure efficient collaboration between commercial, operations, and finance teams.
  • Drive a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement in commercial processes

Education & Experience Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of commercial management experience in the oil & gas contracting sector.
  • Strong knowledge of oil sands operations, site contracting models, and client procurement practices.
  • Experience managing lump sum, unit rate, and cost-reimbursable contracts.
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong negotiation, financial analysis, and risk management skills.
  • Proven ability to manage projects and ensure they are delivered on time and within budget
  • Adept at policy, process and procedure to ensure audit and attest requirements are met.
