We are seeking a skilled and experienced Kitchen Assistant and Short-Order Cook to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for preparing ingredients, cooking food, and ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards. With a minimum of 3 years of kitchen experience and excellent cooking knowledge, you will play a crucial role in delivering an exceptional dining experience to all employees and visitors of our Armstrong Caf.

The Armstrong Caf services and provides affordable breakfast, lunch, and coffee to staff and visitors on-site at our facility. This caf is not open to the public and exclusively provides freshly prepared food available for purchase and also supports catering services for on-site meetings for staff. We seek to make the on-site caf an enjoyable environment that allows all staff to access affordable, healthy, and freshly prepared food.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable interacting with patrons in both a professional and friendly manner, all while preparing and serving food. This position will be further responsible for covering the responsibilities of the Chef/Kitchen Manager when taking vacation or otherwise absent.

This role is located in Scarborough, Ontario

Schedule Details: Monday Friday with shift rotation as required for 6:00am-2:00pm and 8:00am-4:00pm


The key accountabilities of this position are:

Food Preparation:

Prepare ingredients for cooking, including portioning, chopping, and storing food.

Weigh, measure, and mix ingredients.

Prepare and cook food according to recipes, qualify standards, presentation standards, and food preparation checklist.

Prepare both hot and cold foods.

Wash and peel fresh fruits and vegetables.

Monitor food quality during preparation.

Test foods to ensure they are cooked sufficiently and meet quality standards.

Kitchen Management:

Set up and break down workstation efficiently.

Maintain cleanliness and ensure sanitation in the kitchen area, including tables, tools, knives, and equipment. All disinfecting should follow food-safety guidelines.

Check and ensure the correct temperature of appliances and food items.

Adhere to company and safety policies and procedures.

Report maintenance needs, accidents, injuries, and unsafe work conditions to the manager.

Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 25 pounds without assistance.

Operate kitchen equipment such as ovens, stoves, grills, microwaves, and fryers.

Protect the confidentiality of proprietary information and company assets.

Foodservice:

Listen and respond to the concerns of fellow employees appropriately.

Maintain a positive work relationship with all levels in the organization.

Collaborate with team members to achieve common goals.

Serve food in appropriate portions and containers.

Support kitchen manager with all other duties assigned.

Role Requirements:

Minimum of 3 years of kitchen experience, including short-order cooking and catering, preferably in a diner or other business providing breakfast and lunch fare

In-depth understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, regulations policies, and procedures.

Demonstrated accuracy and speed in executing assigned tasks.

Familiarity with industry best practices.

Perform tasks that may require reaching overhead, bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Strong familiarity and adherence to established health and safety guidelines for food preparation

Ability to address patrons in a professional and courteous manner
