Position Description:
PBC Group is seeking a highly skilled and driven professional to join our Ottawa office as an Assistant Controller. This role offers an exceptional opportunity for growth and hands-on experience in the fast-paced real estate and construction sector.
As a key member of our finance team, the Assistant Controller will work closely with senior management to support asset management, monitor investment performance, and oversee financial aspects of real estate development and construction activities. This individual will be responsible for managing the accounting operations across all PBC Group companies, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and strong financial controls.
In addition to the duties typically expected of a senior level finance and accounting professional, the Assistant Controller will lead and manage the following:
- Conversion to the new accounting and job costing IT platform, (from QuickBooks and Sage Construction to Premier Construction Software)
- Accounts Payable/Receivable (AP/AR, including inter-company transactions /reconciliations /chargebacks): Manage the entry and processing of invoices, payments, and collections, ensuring timeliness and accuracy for the PBC Group and owner companies
- Oversee the renewal of insurance policies
- Review HST/GST preparation, reports and filing
The Assistant Controller will also support the Controller to:
- Lead, mentor, and support the accounting team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture.
- Drive team engagement by creating a positive work environment, encouraging professional growth, and supporting career development.
- Oversee and manage the full accounting cycle, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement in financial operations.
- Ensure financial reporting excellence by preparing timely, accurate, and insightful reports, including quarterly and annual reports for PBC Group and monthly reports for operating companies.
- Uphold strict deadlines for financial reporting, audits, and key deliverables, ensuring all stakeholders receive precise and timely information.
- Maintain and enhance accounting systems, internal controls, and budgeting processes, ensuring compliance with GAAP or IFRS.
- Coordinate and prepare year-end files, facilitating external audits with well-organized financial data and supporting documentation.
- Proactively manage cash flow and distributions to optimize returns on investment for stakeholders.
- Champion a culture of accountability and continuous improvement, driving process efficiencies, streamlining workflows, and refining reporting accuracy.
- Encourage a mindset of mastery, helping team members perfect their craft through skill development, best practices, and attention to detail.
- Act as a culture builder, promoting ownership, problem-solving, and a results-driven approach within the team.
- Collaborate closely with accounting teams from PBC and partner organizations outside Ottawa, ensuring alignment and operational efficiency.

Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred. Completion or in pursuit of CPA designation
- 5-10 years of accounting experience in real estate or property management, project accounting and/or procurement
- Preference will be given to candidates with proficiency in ERP accounting software (Premier Construction an asset), QuickBooks, Sage Construction
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative team mindset
- Familiarity with real estate accounting practices
