Job Title: Emergency Response Coordinator

Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, or their designate, the Emergency Response Coordinator is accountable to provide technical and supervisory leadership to the Emergency Response program in accordance with the Health, Safety & Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia (HSRC) and any applicable Industry guidelines and best practices. The coordinator works with the existing Mine Rescue team members, ensuring the training guidelines are followed and the team and equipment are prepared to respond to all types of emergencies.

This is a seasonal position, the anticipated employment duration, will depend on the workload and the construction season.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Leadership and Training

  • Provide leadership to a volunteer emergency response team through coaching, mentoring, and onsite training.

  • Enable the team to respond to fire, medical, rescue, environmental, and other emergencies at a remote mining facility.

Incident Response and Command

  • Act as Incident Commander during emergencies, leading the team in response measures and site control.

  • Perform various rescue operations, including:

    • Surface Mine Rescue

    • Confined Space Rescue

    • Personnel Extraction

    • Vehicle and Equipment Incidents

    • Firefighting

    • High Angle/Rope Rescue

    • SCBA Use

    • Hazmat Response

    • Land-Based Spill Response

    • Aircraft Accidents

    • Search and Rescue for Missing Persons

  • Provide technical expertise in risk assessments and emergency response procedure development.

  • Ensure monitoring systems are in place and conduct periodic fire safety and emergency response reviews.

Fire Safety and Risk Assessment

  • Conduct annual fire safety risk assessments per industry guidelines and best practices.

Incident Investigation

  • Participate in surface mine rescue and emergency response investigations by:

    • Freezing the scene

    • Collecting evidence

    • Providing statements

    • Acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME)

    • Leading the investigation

Emergency Drills and Readiness

  • Develop, execute, and debrief spill response and emergency scenario exercises.

  • Conduct readiness drills for camp evacuations.

  • Prepare response gear and equipment, provide training, and lead spill response efforts.

Permitting and Equipment Testing

  • Assess shops based on criteria and issue hot work permits.

  • Inspect and test valves and other equipment for firewater testing.

Emergency Response Program Coordination

  • Ensure emergency response equipment and materials are maintained and operational.

  • Perform cleaning, inspections, repairs, and pre-operational checks on equipment.

  • Routinely operate equipment to ensure readiness for fire, medical, rescue, or spill emergencies.

Equipment and Risk Management

  • Develop and maintain an inventory of emergency response equipment.

  • Establish and update an emergency response risk register as the scope of work evolves.

Program Development and Compliance

  • Contribute to program priorities, design, and implementation.

  • Ensure emergency response program alignment with HSRC and industry best practices.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the employer.

The Ideal Candidate

Education / Qualifications:

  • Certificate in NFPA 1001 FF1&2 required
  • Certificate in NFPA 1072 – HAZMAT Operations required
  • Certificate in First Aid Instructor training is an asset
  • Certificate in High Angle/Slope Rescue training required
  • British Columbia Surface Mine Rescue Certificate is required (BC Advanced Surface Mine Rescue Preferred)
  • Ability to instruct the British Columbia Surface Mine Rescue certification course

Experience / Skills

  • A Minimum of 3-5 years of Emergency Response related experience in the construction/mining industry

  • In-depth knowledge of open pit mining operations

  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office Suite

  • Must have a Valid Driver's License

  • Must be able to pass Fit for Duty testing

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Detail oriented with excessive attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Exhibits a high degree of responsibility for confidential matters
  • Effective team player who can jump in wherever is needed
  • Strong interpersonal and reasoning skills, with proven problem-solving abilities
  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as with others

Work Location & Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena's Travel Policy.

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.

CompensationThe expected salary range for this position is CA$100,000 - CA$120,000, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
