We are looking for a talented individual to join akisqnuk First Nation in the full-time role ofPolicy Coordinator. This role, reporting to the Director of Governance, plays a key role in developing and analyzing akisqnuk First Nation (AFN) governing policies, providing Chief and Council with essential information to support informed decision-making. This position ensures that AFNs legislative, strategic, and operational policies align with the akisqnuk Final Agreement, Self-Government Agreement, and Constitution.

akisqnuk First Nation (AFN) is a member Community of the Ktunaxa Nation. AFN exists for the Community. Externally, we are here to serve the Community, and internally, we are our own Community, comprised of different departments unified by our Vision, Mission, and Values. As a team, through our own roles and departments, the AFN Organization works together to achieve our strategic plan. Our Thinking and continue to progress and move our community forward.

Note: This position is full-time with a set weekly schedule, working 35 hours each week.


The primary responsibilities include:

Support Chief and Council by analyzing policies, agreements, and legislation.

Conduct policy research, including quantitative and qualitative analysis, and provide policy briefings and memos.

Assist with policy development and implementation, focusing on AFN operations and strategic initiatives.

Implement UNDRIP (United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) in all policy reviews and development processes.

Ensure compliance with AFNs legislative framework and lead policy evaluations.

Collaborate with various stakeholders to support AFNs strategic goals and initiatives.

Draft policy documents, reports, position papers, and responses to federal and provincial directives.

Other duties as required.


Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in a related field (Indigenous studies, public policy, political or social science, or a related field of study).

Minimum of 2 years of strong research, analytical skills and policy development and implementation.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of Indigenous policies and governance.

Strong customer services skills when working with Nation members.

Experience working with First Nations / Indigenous communities.

Knowledge of language, history and culture of the Ktunaxa Nation is an asset.

Working knowledge of the functions and interactions of the various levels of government including federal, provincial, Treaty First Nation, and municipal, etc.

Understanding of Public and Band Policy as it relates to reservation Indigenous issues.

Political savviness and curiosity.

Competitive pay ($60,000 to $67,500 per year, depending on education and experience)
