Clearwater Structures is a general contractor and an industry leader in the heavy civil construction sector. We specialize in new bridge construction and rehabilitation, hydraulic lifting, concrete restoration, dam construction and several other services.

We are looking for an experienced, positive, individual with a passion for health and safety to join our team. The Assistant Health & Safety Manageris accountable for driving a positive safety culture, supporting company leaders, ensuring participation, annual training, and maintaining COR requirements across the company.


This position requires frequent travel to project sites throughout Ontario.

Responsibilities

  • Provide coverage for the Manager of Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Coordinate inspections, investigations, and occupational safety activities as needed.
  • Conduct job site safety inspections, including hazard analysis and safe work procedure reviews.
  • Investigate near misses, accidents, and workplace incidents, ensuring corrective actions are documented and implemented.
  • Provide training and guidance to employees on safety practices, emergency procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Research and recommend personal protective equipment (PPE) best practices.
  • Support programs to maintain COR, conduct COR audits and support COR processes and other compliance initiatives.
  • Inspect/Audit job sites to ensure compliance with Health and Safety Management System for employees, visitors, and subcontractors.
  • Identify and provide positive behaviour corrections to employees not following safety guidelines.
  • Facilitate safety meetings, toolbox talks, on-site.
  • Assist Co-chairs in the administration and facilitation of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Assist with the reporting of WSIB claims and return to work program.
  • Support and counsel supervisors and field safety representatives on occupational safety issues.
  • Provide trend analysis to track and improve safety initiatives across all business units.
  • Represent Clearwater in Health & Safety matters with external organizations (e.g., client, Government Agencies, WSIB).
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and updating Health & Safety Management Systems (policies, procedures, and industry best practices).
  • Create, maintain, and modify in-house training programs and participate in the spring/winter orientation programs.
  • Review contractual documents for Health & Safety compliance.
  • Oversee CVOR compliance and driver training.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in construction and/or aggregates safety.
  • CRSP, CRST, or NCSO designation is considered a strong asset.
  • Post-secondary education in a related field is an asset.
  • Supervisory experience an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario WSIB regulations.
  • JHSC Level 1 & 2 Certification in construction and/or aggregates.
  • Certifications in WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, Working at Heights, and other relevant safety training.
  • Tech-savvy with solid knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn and use new programs quickly and efficiently.
  • Strong ability to speak confidently and present to large groups.
  • Excellent English communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Comfortable using health & safety software (familiarity with SiteDocs, ISN Portal, and WSIB website portal would be an asset)
  • Positive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills with ability to build rapport Highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to demonstrate assertiveness when required
  • Class G drivers license with clean

Work Conditions

  • Frequent travel to job sites, training sessions, off-site meetings (company vehicle provided).
  • Combination of office and field work, with time allocation based on workload and business needs.
  • Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments in all weather conditions.
  • Must be available for after-hours emergency response as required.
  • Some overtime and weekend work may be necessary.
