The Communications Coordinator will support the execution of the organizations communication strategies to enhance HCIs visibility, engage stakeholders, and promote its mission. This role involves content creation, social media management, and event promotion. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, creative communicator with a passion for storytelling and humanitarian work.

Position Title: Communications Coordinator
Reporting To: Government and Media Relations Officer
Location: Hybrid - Ottawa
Terms: Permanent part time - 20 - 25 hours per week
Deadline to Apply: Ongoing until the position is filled

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and implementing strategies to enhance the organizations reputation and manage its relationship with governmental bodies and agencies under the guidance of the senior officer.
  • Act as a secondary point of contact for government officials, maintaining relationships and assisting in advocating for the organizations interests.
  • Track and monitor legislative and regulatory developments that may affect the organization, providing regular updates and preliminary analysis to senior management.
  • Support the creation of briefing materials, presentations, and reports for meetings with government officials, stakeholders, and the senior officer.
  • Assist in coordinating responses to government inquiries, requests for information, and public records requests.
  • Support media relations efforts by helping to cultivate relationships with journalists, editors, and media outlets, ensuring coverage of the organizations activities.
  • Draft and edit press releases, media statements, and other communication materials under the supervision of the officer.
  • Help organize press conferences, interviews, and media briefings, and assist the officer during spokesperson duties when necessary.
  • Monitor media coverage and social media channels to assess public opinion, highlight potential issues, and report findings to senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with internal departments such as Legal, Public Affairs, and Marketing to support and align government relations and media strategies with overall organizational goals.
  • Assist in pitching story ideas to media outlets and tracking media coverage across print, broadcast, and online channels.
  • Support the preparation of executives and spokespersons for media interviews and public speaking engagements.
  • Assist in other tasks as assigned, providing general administrative support and coordinating logistics for government relations and media activities

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in communications, public relations, or marketing, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms, content management systems (e.g., WordPress), and email marketing tools (e.g., Mailchimp).
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Experience with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  • Passion for humanitarian work and alignment with HCIs mission and values.
