Job DescriptionThis role is responsible for the design and development of new, expanded or renovated retail stores, from site and store planning, to the completion of working drawings and specifications, consistent with the Capital Plan. The performance of the duties must ensure a quality service approach to all employees, customers and suppliers. All responsibilities must be performed in a manner consistent with the Farm Boy Way.
Major Responsibilities:
- Conduct site reviews to confirm as built status of stores.
- Review and obtain signoff on scope of work for all projects with the Regional Retail Operations teams.
- Manage project schedules as it relates to the accurate completion of Design drawings (including: construction drawings and specifications), in line with Regional and National Capital Plan execution timelines.
- Ensure that all design documents required for project submission for REAC approval are completed accurately and on time, including Site Plans, Fixture Plans, and Elevations.
- Manage external design consultants (ASM&E), to ensure projects are completed accurately, on time and on budget consistent with the approved Store Layout.
- Ensure that approved Fixture Plan and all National Design standards are adhered to by reviewing, (plan check), all construction plans and specification prior issuance for Bid. Eliminate errors and omissions.
- Ensure that plans are submitted by the consultant team to the jurisdiction having authority for the release of Building permits to ensure completion of the project in accordance with Project Schedule.
- Ensure that as-built drawings and specifications are received from consultants.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment as per company requirements.
- Adhere to and utilize implemented processes, protocols and technical solutions for all design activities.
- Maximize synergies and consistencies, consolidating and reducing overall project costs and time lines.
- Recommend alternative materials and methods as cost-effective solutions.
- Position Sobeys to contractors, developers and suppliers as a “first to mind”, priority customer.
- Provide insight, guidance and technical expertise to cross functional teams as relates to store design.

- Work with the Regional Design Manager, National Director of Design, Real Estate, Regional Construction Director and Project Management (Construction), and Regional Retail Operations to ensure that key company objectives are incorporated into Capital Expenditure plans.
- In conjunction with the National Design team develop design concepts, décor drawings and Fixture plans for all capital projects.
- Assist Design Manager to provide support to Real Estate Department with all design aspects related to RE Deals. Including the review of Site plans elevations, and providing technical support, (site engineering, geotechnical reports etc), relative to the development of projects. Ensure that all National Design standards are being adhered to.
- Support Design Manager with project start up meetings with all stake holders.
- Provide support to the Construction Project management team to ensure on time and on budget completion of projects. Follow up with consultants to ensure that all RFIs and approved Change Orders are issued in a timely fashion. Participate in periodic on-site reviews with the Project manager to provide support.
- Work Closely with National Design and Marketing as it relates to interior décor signs and messaging.
- Work closely with National Procurement team to ensure accurate execution of the Capital Plan.
- Participate in year-end warranty inspections.
- Participate in final project inspection and post-mortem to establish recommendations for future projects.
- Work closely with the Regional Construction Project Management and Regional Retail Operations team to ensure that region specific concerns are addressed.
- May be required to undertake other related duties on a periodic basis.
- Typically requires completion of a post-secondary program with an emphasis in Business Administration or Project Management, plus a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge in the development of site plans, preliminary layouts, fixture plans, and assignment drawings through full construction documents and specifications. Plan checking, and Permit Process (Development and Building Permit) experience.
- Excellent working knowledge of AutoCAD/Revit, Microsoft Office suite.
- Adobe Illustrator, Sketch Up software experience an asset.
- Good understanding and working knowledge of Building Code and local government requirements.
- Ability to provide direction and decision making on design issues with Consultants.
- Good presentation skills, (oral/written/Power Point).
- Good organizational skills.
- Ability to establish rapport with others and build relationships that are beneficial in achieving work-related goals.
- Ability to manage a variety of complex projects simultaneously.
- Self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
- Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to gather and assess information, formulate and evaluate alternatives and propose a recommended solution
- Understanding of expense and budget management.
- Strong technical knowledge of construction details.
- Knowledge of HVAC, Refrigeration and Building Control Systems.
- Knowledge of food retail building requirements.
Work & Sensory Environment:
- May be required to sit for long periods of time at workstation.
- Providing service to several people or departments, working under many simultaneous deadlines.
