Mentor Clinic is separate from but contracted to NS Health. It is publicly funded there are no patient fees.Mentormeans experienced trusted advisor. The broad-based inter-professional and layperson clinic will 1. mentor one another 2. mentor patients 3. patients will mentor us.

Occupational Therapist Role:


As part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Occupational Therapist (OT) will work with patients to improve their overall physical and emotional/mental wellbeing and functionality in areas such their work, home, and social life. The ideal candidate possesses prior experience in treatment of patients with mental health concerns. They will identify and help mitigate barriers that prevent patients from reaching their full functional capabilities through in depth assessments and holistic treatment plans that centre the autonomy, experiences, and needs of the patient. In doing so, the OT will work as a part of collaborative team that emphasizes education, advocacy, and growth. As a collaborative team member, the OT will have opportunities to grow and expand their own knowledge and skills in turn.

Please note this is an in-person position based out of Mentor Clinic in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Regular hours of work are Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, with a 30 min lunch break. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required and will be discussed in advance.

Expected Job Outcomes:

Patient Care

Assessment and Treatment Plans:

  • Review and process OT referrals; consult with referring provider if issued internally.
  • Conduct assessments and develop patient-centred treatment plans in accordance with Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics and Occupational Therapy Act of Nova Scotia and in collaboration with providers in the patients circle of care.
  • Design treatment plans that incorporate the patient's own experiences, needs, and goals, with consideration of broader systemic factors and social determinants of health.
  • Collaborate and facilitate communication between internal and external contacts (such as healthcare providers, patient, family, care facilities, community resources, etc).
  • Thoroughly document treatment and care plans in a manner accessible to both patients and providers.
  • Engage in patient advocacy and education.
  • If need is identified, refer patients to appropriate services within and/or outside the Clinic.

Mentorship, Education, and Process Improvement

  • Develop positive working relationships/partnerships with other disciplines, agencies and health care professionals in order to promote coordinated service, quality care and access to appropriate resources for patients.
  • Collaborate with members of an interdisciplinary health team such as family physicians, nurses, dietitians, occupational therapists, social workers and others to plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate patient care in consultation with patients and their families.
  • Participate in meetings and Continuing Medical Education sessions as required.
  • Assist with development and improvement of systems and processes used by all providers within the clinic.

Skills, Qualifications, and Accomplishments:

Must-have:

  • Registered Occupational Therapist license with College of Occupational Therapists ofNova Scotia.
  • Prior experience in treatment of mental or emotional health concerns.
  • The ability to maintain employee confidentiality during interactions with staff.
  • Solid computer skills with a working knowledge of EMR and Microsoft Office.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other health care providers.
