Job Description:

Business Architecture is valuable because it explains an organization's business processes, goals, and strategies. With a well-defined business architecture, organizations can identify inefficiencies, gaps, and opportunities for improvement. This, in turn, enables them to streamline their operations, reduce costs, increase profits, and stay competitive. A business architect is a strategic, senior role responsible for business transformation and overseeing critical deliverables; such as business capabilities and capability models, and value streams.

Reporting to the Manager, Planning and Architecture, the Business Architect will create roadmaps, set standards, and ensure the alignment of IT processes, projects, and solutions with organizational strategies and objectives. The Business Architect will collaborate with stakeholders across AltaLink to understand business needs, manage IT related risks to the business, and ensure the efficient use of resources including the planning and management of technology debt. Their work will be crucial in enhancing organizational agility, improving performance, and supporting digital transformation initiatives.

Responsibilities also include operating and business model analysis, synergizing with other business entities, developing capability maps and other artifacts, and assisting in the technology enablement of core capabilities and value streams.

The Business Architect will provide valuable expertise by participating in multiple organizational programs and activities in various roles, which include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Cross-program, and cross-project Architecture strategies, opportunities, and problem resolution
  • Complex development projects;
  • Ensuring key business unit capabilities and the “voice of the customer” is considered and addressed through strategy, planning and development activities;
  • Consulting in business process analysis and design, and service delivery, particularly with respect to the use of information, trends, and directions; and
  • Auditing projects to ensure conformance and compliance of projects and programs with Architectural guidelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing, analyzing and designing business capability and process roadmaps while ensuring they align with overall information technology strategies.
  • Design, implementation, and execution of the processes for the definition, maintenance, and conformance management of the Business Architecture.
  • Updating and maintaining Business Architecture deliverables for AltaLink.
  • Creation of business architecture models that reflect the organization's strategies and goals.
  • Establishing and facilitating relationships with business stakeholders
  • Lead architectural review and resolution of inter-program and inter-project issues.
  • Facilitate Architectural Review Boards and architecture governance processes.
  • Work across the Planning and Architecture team and other key stakeholders within AltaLink to create Enterprise Architecture deliverables.
  • Mentoring and coaching on the appropriate use and application of Business Architecture methodologies.
  • Champion and lead organizational change management practices related to the migration and maturity of enterprise architecture practices at AltaLink with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Research, assess and recommend new planning and architecture approaches for potential use within AltaLink.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors' degree in the field of Computer Science, Business Administration or Information Technology. Additional relevant certifications such as Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Business Architect (CBA), Certified Enterprise Architect (CEA), or Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) are an asset;
  • 15 years of progressive IT industry experience;
  • 6+ years of experience in a Business Architect, Enterprise Architect or senior Business Analyst position;
  • Business experience outside of an IT Organization is an asset;
  • Utility industry experience is an asset;
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities;
  • Proven track record in creating cohesive, thoughtful and meaningful technology roadmaps and plans 5-10 years in the future;
  • Demonstrated ability to link execution to strategy;
  • Proven ability to understand the business, its products, services, and general landscape and translate this understanding into information technology and security architectural roadmaps;
  • Proven customer service approach in an IT environment;
  • Excellent technical, analytical, and project management skills;
  • Strong process and governance experience;
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal) with ability to influence, lead and support teams and effectively present complex ideas to executive level leadership;
  • Experience in modeling and graphical representations;
  • Experience working directly with the business or as part of non-IT business unit; and
  • Understanding of technologies and concepts, including but not limited to, software development, databases, cloud, big data, business intelligence, and AI;
  • Proven track record of good attendance and job performance.
