POSITION SUMMARY
The Metal Polishing Technician grinds, sands, and polishes metal heritage objects using hand tools or hand-held power tools on a variety of metal, wood, stone, clay, plastic, or glass objects.
KEY RESPONSIBLITIES & DUTIES
- Prepare and maintain equipment, objects, parts and tools for polishing using hand tools, and set up and operate machine tools to perform repetitive machining operations, such as planning, buffing, filing, grinding or other machining operations.
- Select and prepare polish finish according to specifications and perform the final polishing.
- Read and understand drawings, sketches, and work specifications to determine how to lay out workpieces or saw out templates and study job orders/interpret blueprints to determine machining operations to be performed.
- Verify quality of workpieces before and after polishing by inspecting them, comparing them to templates, measuring their dimensions, or testing them in working machinery, and remove all defects using an electric or air buffer/grinder etc.
- Record product and processing data on specified forms.
- Performs work and maintains a safe and clean working environment through daily cleaning by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations according to regulations and all health and safety company rules.
- Ensures tasks are completed to deadlines.
- Polish all necessary surfaces of materials.
- Perform heavy Grinding and polishing of metal to specific specifications of parts using a variety of methods and tools.
- Perform heavy grinding of welds to polish smooth and return weldment to specific dimensions and finishes.
- Communicate any problems to the supervisor in a timely manner.
- Support other activities as required by company requirements and management direction and perform other duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
There are no specific education requirements.
Other Experience or Training:
Experience in polishing metal or a construction environment is a definite asset.
Technical Skills:
- Read and interpret construction drawings
Other Qualifications:
- Must have hand and mounted polisher experience and experience inspecting the work being produced in a metal manufacturing shop, preferably working on custom projects in a production setting.
- Forklift experience an asset.
- Able to read work orders.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Previous experience working with parts in an industrial setting is an asset.
- Quality is of paramount importance to us! You must have high standards of work and can keep up in a fast-paced environment.
- You inspect the work being produced, and despite the never-ending pressure of tight deadlines, you know when something needs to be done better in order to delight our customers with quality workmanship.
- You work well independently and with others in a team setting.
- You understand the safety risks in a metal manufacturing operation and are focused on safety first.
- Ability to meet schedule deadlines, while maintaining highest standard of quality.
- Ability to work for regular and overtime hours (when scheduled or required).
- Must have good manual (hand) dexterity.
- Must have a positive attitude and great interpersonal skills.
- Must be reliable and punctual.
- Must be familiar with and able to use a variety of hand tools.
- Motivated to expand skill set and increase their of expertise.
- Can lift, carry, move up to 26kg/57lbs without assistance and up to 34kg/75lbs with assistance.
- Must have a friendly and great service-related demeanor.
- Must be highly organized.
- Ability to travel for work, as required.
- Able to obtain security clearance, including fingerprinting and a criminal record check (mandatory).
