ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Director, Commercial Underwriting leads a group of underwriting professionals, ensuring adjudication of mortgage applications are in accordance with prudent lending practices and commercial lending principles. Assessing risk and ensuring all applications adhere to both quality and service standards remain the overarching focus for this role through coaching and mentoring their respective team. In addition to the above, the Director will have authorization limits consistent with their individual experience.
In addition:
- Review, analyse and verify mortgage applications for completeness, accuracy, suitability and risk to ensure compliance with all aspects of Home Trust Companys underwriting policies, procedures and guidelines per delegated authority matrices
- Adhere to applicable compliance obligations including Privacy, Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing and internal Anti-Fraud Policy requirements must remain the over-arching focus in carrying out ones responsibilities
- Maintain consistent, objective and sound risk assessments in a high volume, service-oriented environment
- Lead and manage direct reports. Providing direction, coach and train as required, recognize performance and manage non-performance, ensure individualized objectives for all commercial underwriting staff is in place and updated as required; act as a mentor to the commercial underwriting department
- Hands-on leadership approach to make prudent credit decisions on complex mortgage files and escalate to required authority
- Develop tactical strategies in underwriting to support the overall commercial business strategy and the achievement of objectives by prioritizing workflow, initiating initiatives, and resource planning.
- Manage and remediate all internal audit and other audit findings as required
- Act decisively in order to move strategies and initiatives in a timely manner
- Work effectively with all internal business partners to improve underwriting systems to maximize effectiveness and achieve excellence.
- On every transaction, review, assess suitability, risks & complete due diligence requirements, and adjudicate commercial mortgage transactions in accordance with Home Trusts risk appetite using appropriate level of delegated lending authority for decisions
- Maintain clean OSFI and Internal Audit reports
- Maintain a pipeline of all transactions and a list & file of all transactions amended or declined or approved
- Complete the approval and underwriting of files assessed within the target amount of time
- Complete the underwriting of approved commercial mortgages maintaining level of quality and standards required by Home i.e. being accurate and complete and providing sound risk assessments with files well documented following Homes policies, guidelines and procedures and meeting Homes post-funding (i.e. closing documentation) and ERM quality assurance requirements
- Manage special projects or other new initiatives as needed
WHAT WE REQUIRE:
- Authorized to work in Canada
- Great communication skills
- Post-secondary degree or diploma, preferably in business management, finance, or related field (university an asset)
- Solution-focused, takes initiative ensuring self and team work effectively within established guidelines
- Excellent underwriting and analytical skills with ability to make prudent decisions
- Very strong understanding of the real estate and economic environment
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a team environment
- Ability to manage high volume of demands and often competing priorities
