Summary of Responsibilities:
The Marine Traffic Controller is tasked with overseeing the management and administration of
the project sites marine area, coordinating vessel movements, and enforcing marine and
environmental regulations. They may be responsible for leading functional teams or projects and
is regarded as a specialist in marine operations. Responsibilities and essential job functions
include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Control marine traffic in and out of the Project, including setting of routes and speeds.
  • Manage the barge landing scheduling.
  • Review contractors marine programs, vessels, certifications, and training.
  • Review and participate in marine risk assessments.
  • Set minimum vessel operating standards.
  • Inspect and audit contractors marine programs, vessels, certifications, training, and competencies.
  • Coordinate additional marine support for emergency services, e.g. rescue, spills, or man-over-board.
  • Coordinate dock use, ferries and water taxi. Track vessel compliance from point of departure and point of destination.
  • Orientate vessel operators to site and expectations.
  • Approve vessel for Project operations.
  • Prepare rescue plans for in-water marine works.
  • Update the marine management plan as required or at minimum, yearly.
  • Assess suitability of vessel for the intended scope(s).
  • Support module and material deliveries.
  • Coordinate ramp usage schedule.
  • Coordinate with designated Project contractors, in case of marine emergency.
  • Have awareness of and collaborate with other marine users such as Squamish.
  • Terminals (SQT); Squamish Fire Fighters; Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR), Squamish RCMP, Canadian Coast Guard, etc..
  • Attend project meetings as required, including facilitating monthly marine meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum seven to ten years experience in marine operations management
  • Exceptional comprehension and command of the English language (written and verbal)
  • Advanced proficiency in marine communication systems (VHF Radio, AIS,Radar, ECDIS).
  • Trained to the level of V103/1 (Vessel Traffic Service Operations) or ability toachieve this level.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of maritime regulations (international andfederal/local), classification societies, vessel design, and marine engineeringprinciples.
  • Familiarity with marine software and systems is highly desirable.
  • Proven history of successfully leading and managing cross-functional teams.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making abilities are essential forthis role.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, handlingmultiple priorities and effectively managing unexpected challenges or crises.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proactive approach to building andmaintaining effective relationships with stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and compliance practices within themaritime industry.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
