Job Description

A Day in the Life:

PRT is currently recruiting for a full time Grower 1 (Lead Grower) position to assist with the many different aspects of nursery responsibilities at PRT Prince Albert, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada. Grower 1 will be responsible for ensuring nursery cultural practices are planned and implemented to achieve target standards for all products while assisting in risk management activities ensuring stock is properly protected to avoid losses. The person in the Grower 1 position assists with the production of quality forest seedling crops by applying effective forest nursery practices and principles. This position provides an opportunity to operationally assist, co-ordinate and train forest nursery workers in required nursery work activities. This engaging, high paced, physical position offers a safe work environment and an opportunity for a career that will make a positive change in the world. Candidates should have a desire and keenness to learn about the seed processing activities at PRT Prince Albert, work independently and efficiently. Regular work hours are 40 hours per week with varying shift times and on-call responsibilities by grow season, weekend work and shift work are required. Relevant experience in horticulture is required. Successful applicants will be required to complete in house online training and obtain a pesticide applicator certificate. Candidates may be interviewed and tested to assess their skill, ability, competence, and efficiency for this position.

Key accountabilities of the Grower 1 are:

  • Keep neat and accurate records including computerized record keeping systems
  • Supervise and train the Grow Team and forest nursery workers
  • Operate computerized and other control systems
  • Maintain, repair and upgrade nursery facilities and ensure proper maintenance of equipment
  • Follow a company directed Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for pesticide application
  • Promote collaboration and teamwork at all levels
  • Set targets (i.e., production, timelines) and evaluate achievement

About the team:

The person filling the Grower 1 position will work alongside other nursery workers and will report to the Nursery Manager.

Qualifications

Required/ Minimum Qualifications & Skills:

  • A two-year diploma in horticulture or agriculture, or an acceptable combination of formal training and relevant experience
  • Valid Driver's License and reliable transportation
  • Knowledge of greenhouse equipment and climate control systems
  • Proficient understanding of production processes, quality control principles, and safety regulations
  • Strong planning, organization, and time management skills
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong and professional communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Great organizational and record keeping skills
  • Ability to provide basic maintenance of facilities and equipment

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Pesticide Applicator Certificate
  • Relevant forest seedling nursery experience
