The Relief Cook works within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team and, is responsible for the planning and preparation of nutritionally balanced meals for program participants and their children.
ABOUT YWCA WOMEN'S SHELTER
YWCA Women's Shelter has been in operation since 1991. The shelter provides safe and secure emergency shelter for women, gender-diverse people and their children who are fleeing violence. YWCA Women's Shelter is staffed 24 hours a day and can welcome up to 11 families at one time in its 33 bed shelter. In addition to shelter, women, gender-diverse people and their children are provided with food, clothing, diapers and assistance with efforts to obtain housing, Social Assistance, medical and legal help. Staff, which have expertise in numerous areas (i.e. job readiness, advocacy, housing, parenting, effects of violence on women, gender-diverse people and their children), are available to work with women and gender-diverse people as they begin to establish lives that are free from violence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepares lunch and dinner meals;
- May be required to shop for groceries
- Unpacks and stores food and supplies some heavy lifting is required i.e.: boxes;
- Works with women to identify special dietary needs and provides food related to these needs where possible;
- Plans a balanced and nutritious weekly menu in consultation with residents and staff and posts menu in the dining room at the beginning of each week
- Ensures that the nutritional/food needs of program participants are met
- Occasionally orders all food, including, cleaning supplies and paper products within monthly allocated budget stipulated by the supervisor;
- Washes dishes, pots, pans and other equipment used to prepare the lunch and dinner meals
- Cleans the kitchen at least twice weekly, including all appliances
- Cleans and maintains the food storage space fridge and freezers;
- Ensures that the kitchen is kept and maintained in accordance with Toronto Public Health regulations;
- Follows Personal Hygiene guidelines when handling food
QUALIFICATIONS
- A generalized education at the high school level, including e.g. training/certificate in public health standards and general nutrition. (Cases for Equivalency will be considered);
- Food Handlers Certificate required.
- 1-3 years directly related work experience;
- Ability to lift up to 15 kg;
- Ability to work independently;
- Basic computer knowledge;
- Experience preparing culturally diverse meals for a multicultural environment;
- Experience teaching nutrition and working with women in crisis;
- Communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills;
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task in a busy environment;
- Knowledge of a second language and/or culture would be an asset.
