Position Description
The Calgary based Environmental Technician position is an opportunity to gain hands on experience in the environmental industry and learn alongside experienced professionals. Join a growing team who are passionate about the SYLVIS mission to Make Waste History through sustainable residuals management. The focus of the Environmental Technician role is to implement our operational and consulting project requirements both in the field and the office. You are a self-starter known for your organizational skills and work ethic. You are someone who enjoys time in the field (no matter the weather), is mechanically inclined, and keen to travel to project sites throughout AB and BC. Functions and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Supervising biosolids deliveries to field sites and associated activities
- Conducting environmental monitoring and fieldwork, including site visits, sampling, and data collection
- Light field equipment operation such as pressure washers, aerial drones, and gas/electric powered hand tools
- Operating small tractor and weed trimmers for vegetation management
- Adhere to safety system requirements at all times and actively support a safe work culture
- Regular monitoring of willow crop for pests, diseases, and weeds
- Data entry and recordkeeping
- Spatial data management and map generation in ArcGIS and Google Earth
- Cleaning and maintaining sampling and field equipment
- Administrative responsibilities as required
Qualifications
- Technical diploma or Bachelors degree in environmental science, plant science, soil science, agriculture, or a related discipline
- Valid Canadian drivers license
- Have your own means of transportation to commute to the office and local field sites
Skills and Experience
- Experience working independently in a field-based role
- Experience driving in off-road conditions and pulling a trailer (or willingness to be trained)
- Experience operating equipment such as gas-powered trimmers, mowers, and small tractors
- Physically fit and able to complete repetitive tasks such as soil sampling
- Comfortable working outdoors in adverse weather conditions
- Willing to travel and work alone
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Proficient with ArcGIS mapping software or willing to learn
- Fluent in English with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, team members, and subcontractors
- Experience working with pesticides is an asset
- Experience working with organic residuals such as manure, biosolids, or compost is an asset
