Food and Nutritional Wellness Worker Position Summary

Seabird Island is committed to fostering health and wellness within our community. We are seeking aFood and Nutritional Wellness Worker to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance the nutrition and well-being of participants in our programs.

Under the direction of the Senior Clinical Substance Use Program Lead, the Food and Nutritional Wellness Worker provides meal planning, preparation, and kitchen management for program participants. This role involves menu planning, estimating and ordering required supplies, preparing and cooking meals and snacks in accordance with client dietary needs and established Food Safe and Licensing standards. The Food and Nutritional Wellness Worker will also support nutrition education initiatives and create a welcoming and inclusive food environment for the clients.

This is a one-year Full-Time Term Contract with an end date of March 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension.

Two Full-Time (40 Hours Per Week) and Two Weekend Only (16 Hours Per Week) positions are available, we ask that candidates indicate their preference in their Cover Letter.

What You'll Do

Meal Preparation & Nutrition

  • Prepare balanced, nutritious meals and snacks that support the health and well-being of program participants.
  • Incorporate traditional First Nations foods into meal plans where possible.
  • Ensure meals align with dietary needs, allergies, and restrictions of program participants.
  • Follow Canadas Food Guide and collaborate with a Registered Dietitian and supervisor to ensure proper nutritional guidelines are met.
  • Monitor clients' food and fluid intake and report concerns to the supervisor or nurses.
  • Collaborate with the Traditional Food Specialist, Food Sovereignty Coordinator and food services team members across the organization to ensure a shared menu planning, nutrition goals, and unified approach to inclusion of traditional foods.

Food Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure proper food storage, temperature control, and preparation in accordance with Food Safe Guidelines.
  • Complete and maintain food safety documentation, including monthly Food Safe Excellence Checklists.
  • Adhere to licensing requirements, allergy requirements, and make necessary corrections or reports as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and dining areas.
  • Follow cleaning procedures and checklists, including washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, and waste disposal.

Inventory & Purchasing

  • Monitor food supply levels and determine ordering needs.
  • Place orders with approved suppliers, verify deliveries, and ensure proper stock rotation.

Quality Assurance & Client Engagement

  • Evaluate meal quality by gathering client feedback and observing food consumption.
  • Adjust recipes and portions as needed to maintain high standards.
  • Engage with youth and program participants to promote healthy eating habits and nutrition education.
  • Support program initiatives that promote healthy nutrition and food security.

Other Duties

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.

Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'wqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively engage and support projects, work, and initiatives.
  • Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs and schedules of clients and community needs. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule.

What You Bring

  • Red Seal certification / Red Seal Apprentice or equivalent culinary training and experience.
  • Food Handlers Certificate required, BC FoodSafe Level 2 (an asset).
  • First Aid certification preferred.
  • Certification in nutrition is an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience cooking for groups.
  • Strong understanding of nutrition, dietary needs, and Indigenous food traditions.
  • Knowledge of meal planning, ordering, food safety regulations, licensing requirements, and kitchen maintenance.
  • Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
  • Experience with inventory, ordering procedures. and staying within a set budget.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Preferred:

  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Islands culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.

  • Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
