Overview
The Specialist, reporting to the Director of Stakeholder Relations and Communications, collaborates with Travel Alberta leaders and stakeholders to support the organization's objectives and manage multiple types of communications and corporate events. They engage key stakeholders, work collaboratively with Travel Alberta team members, government officials, and research and develop materials for various audiences, including Travel Alberta senior leadership, industry professionals, government officials, and Indigenous partners. The Specialist ensures all materials align with corporate brand guidelines and enhances Travel Alberta's brand and messaging and supports communication planning and strategies.
Additionally, the Specialist is skilled in writing for multiple audiences and creates presentations, communication plans, and strategies to ensure Senior Leadership and government officials, as required, are properly briefed and informed on key activities and issues impacting tourism. Facilitating stakeholder engagement and maintaining corporate reputation, are also important responsibilities of the position. The Specialist also develops and implements strategic products, such as engagement plans for events, announcements, briefing notes, corporate reporting documentation, input into Government of Alberta, and internal project and change management products.
The Specialist manages all logistics for corporate and senior leadership events, including agenda development, vendor selection, budget management, and event proposals. They are proactive and source information to create presentation and briefing materials for Travel Alberta and department representatives as needed.

- Communication and Corporate Strategy Development and Execution:
- Prepares and reviews presentations, corporate reports, briefing notes, and supporting documentation, including key messages and briefing notes for meetings, presentations, ministerial and other media events.
- Support business units with creating key messaging, briefing documentation, and communications advice when required.
- Ensure presentations, corporate reports, briefing notes, and supporting documentation are customized for various audiences, including media partners, internal team members, and government officials.
- Develop a deep understanding of Travel Alberta's audience to create clear and consistent messaging across all communication channels that aligns with Travel Alberta's brand.
- Support the development and implementation of comprehensive communication plans and strategies to support organizational goals.
- Develop and implement crisis communication plans, respond to urgent issues, and manage stakeholder expectations during crises.
- Researches, produces reports, correspondence, executive/board briefing notes, planning documentation, and responses to shareholder/stakeholder inquiries.
- Collaborate with the leadership team to develop and implement comprehensive communication plans and strategies to advance organizational goals.
- Asks insightful questions to guide thorough research, creating clear and useful documentation for Senior Leadership and effectively addressing all requests and inquiries.
- Event Planning and Management:
- Manages all logistical needs and management of event site details by providing comprehensive plans, schedules, documentation, and communication across all involved departments.
- Leads contract management of supplier services, including venues, catering, AV, and security/hosting services for each event.
- Oversee and resolve technical difficulties during both virtual and in-person events.
- Adapt to unexpected circumstances during events to ensure smooth execution and address any unforeseen challenges.
- Implement comprehensive backup plans to address potential issues in order to minimize disruptions to events.
- Develops and manages budgets, invoicing, and reporting on metrics of success.
- Lead discussions to evaluate what went well to provide direction and input on the continuous improvement of the events delivered.
- Measure past successes, identifying best practices, and propose new ideas to expand the event's potential.
- Gather feedback from participants and stakeholders, document lessons learned and implement actionable changes to enhance future events.
- Stakeholder engagement, including intergovernmental relations and industry partners:
- Identify and build strong relationships with key corporate stakeholders (tourism operators, industry associations, media partners, destination marketing organizations, Indigenous communities, governments, etc.).
- Develops and maintains a strong understanding and cultural awareness of the nuances and practices when engaging with Indigenous Peoples and communities.
- Engages with Destination Development Team, including Indigenous Relations team members, on the design, execution, and implementation of Travel Alberta's Indigenous relations engagement initiatives, programs, and activities in partnership with Indigenous Tourism Alberta.
- Incorporate stakeholder feedback and viewpoints into communication products to ensure alignment between stakeholders and Travel Alberta.
- Ensure consistent, transparent, and open communication with all stakeholders and industry partners, regularly sharing updates on projects, initiatives, and organizational developments.
- Identifies opportunities for new outreach initiatives and activities to support engagement and communicate Travel Alberta's relevance to its stakeholders and shareholders.
- Creates and manages stakeholder-related communications material, speaking notes, briefing notes, briefing binders, event itineraries, etc.
Required Qualification (Essential) - Education/Training/Certification
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Business, Political Science, or related discipline.
Required Qualification (Essential) - Competencies, Experience, Knowledge, Skills
- Minimum of five years in corporate communications, government policy, or similar role.
- Familiarity with government departments/agencies and knowledge of the Alberta tourism industry and Travel Alberta's role.
- Proven experience in developing and executing communication strategies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience in writing for various audiences and styles (e.g., press releases, speaking notes, issues briefs, corporate reports, website copy, policy documents, and government submissions for government, media, and corporate purposes).
- Ability to deliver high-quality reports and briefing notes under tight deadlines and pressure situations, with strong planning, organizational, and critical thinking skills. The successful candidate thinks ahead and prepares written material for stakeholders well in advance.
- Experience building and maintaining professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders, planning and implementing stakeholder engagement activities and events (e.g., open houses, town halls, conferences, media events, virtual forums).
- Versatile, responsive, and results-oriented, with a high aptitude for managing and solving tactical issues.
- Ability to respond to urgent communication issues or crises in a calm and effective manner.
- Ability to deliver and maintain clear and consistent messaging across various communication channels for a variety of audiences.
