Shared Value Solutions (SVS) is an environmental and community development consulting firm. The Position

Were looking for an Intermediate Biologist - Fish and Aquatic Ecosystems to fill a full-time parental leave position until the end of 2026 with the possibility of extension.

Requirements:

• A degree in fisheries biology, aquatic ecology, environmental science, or similar equivalent lived experience
• 3-5+ years of professional experience in aquatic biology, including a background in at least one of the following disciplines: ecology, fisheries, environmental biology or a related field
• Understanding of the life histories, biology, and community interactions of fish populations in Canada
• Excellent technical writing and analytical skills, including experience with data management and analysis, preparing technical reports, and communicating complex issues in plain language (written, verbal, presentations) for a variety of audiences
• Understanding of Canadian federal, provincial, and territorial legislation as they apply to regulatory approvals and permitting processes affecting fisheries and aquatic ecosystems (e.g. Fisheries Act, Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations, Impact Assessment Act, Endangered Species Act, Species at Risk Act, etc.)
• Experience in providing recommendations for mitigation and accommodation measures, fish habitat compensation plans, environmental effects monitoring programs, and ecological restoration measures.
• Experience in designing and completing aquatic and/or fisheries field data collection such as fish collections, fish habitat assessments, sediment sampling and lower trophic sampling field programs.
• Experience coordinating and conducting technical peer reviews of regulatory environmental permitting and approvals reports, applications, and permits for major infrastructure development projects (e.g., mining, oil, gas, energy) related to fisheries and aquatic biology Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Experience with respectfully braiding knowledge systems to support the successful implementation of environmental science projects and/or research
• Skills and experience working in cross-cultural settings, preferably with First Nation, Mtis, and/or Inuit communities
  

Responsibilities:

• Managing projects that are multi-disciplinary in nature
  
• Providing guidance and support to more junior staff through the explanation of facts, policies, and practices related to fisheries and aquatic biology
• Developing and providing recommendations for mitigation and accommodation measures, fish habitat compensation plans, monitoring programs, and ecological restoration measures for simple environments and assists with recommendations for complex environments
• Assisting in the design, and acts as field lead, for the execution of fish collections, fish habitat assessments, sediment sampling, and lower trophic sampling field programs, including community-based monitoring programs.
• Leading the delivery of training programs related to hands-on monitoring of fish collections, fish habitat assessments, sediment sampling, and lower trophic sampling
• Conducting QA/QC of fisheries and aquatic biology monitoring data
• Building and maintaining client relationships through a comprehensive understanding of client needs, priorities, and objectives while providing excellent client service.
• Liaising effectively with Indigenous community clients, regulators and proponents.
• Working with cross-functional teams to ensure our clients goals are met within each project
• Providing clear and concise report writing and presentations
• Excellence in project delivery

Asset Qualifications:

• Experience in cumulative effects or related fields is a strong asset
• Experience with Indigenous law and governance, UNDRIP, FPIC, and shared decision-making
• Awareness of data and communication security and confidentiality
• Experience with planning and implementing communication and consultation programs and activities, lands management, Traditional Knowledge, land use and occupancy, GIS, community economic development, conflict resolution, negotiations, capacity building / training, and multimedia storytelling
• Good plain language communication skills
