THE ROLE
The Customs Specialist will be responsible for managing and overseeing customs processes to ensure compliance with international trade regulations. The primary focus will be on tariff classification, country of origin reviews, and ensuring proper documentation for imports and exports. This role requires collaboration with customs brokers, internal teams, and regulatory bodies to manage duties, tariffs, and trade compliance. The position also involves administrative functions related to customs processes.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
· Conduct tariff classification and country of origin reviews for all incoming and outgoing products.
· Ensure all required CUSMA/USMCA certificates are on file, request missing certificates from suppliers, and submit them to customs brokers.
· Determine duty impact due to new tariffs, working with product managers to verify accuracy based on material and end use.
· Create and maintain detailed lists of all John Brooks items for incoming goods and determine foreign tariff codes for outgoing goods.
· Prepare and review customs documents for exports, ensuring all required paperwork is completed and compliant.
· Provide necessary information to Sales for billing actual duty impact and work with Finance to ensure duties are correctly included on customer invoices.
· Review and confirm invoices payable to brokers based on export documents.
· Work with EPPS to prepare pro-forma invoices for direct shipments.
· Verify GST payable within the CARM portal and conduct spot checks on entries.
· Cross-reference and review import entries (over 5000 entries) to determine applied duties, ensuring proper classification and compliance with applicable tariffs
· Collaborate with Canadian and U.S. customs brokers to ensure compliance and resolve discrepancies.
Requirements
Essential:
• 3-5 years of experience in customs coordination, tariff classification, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of customs regulations, duties, and tariff classifications.
• Experience working with customs brokers and regulatory agencies.
• Proficiency in Excel for managing and analyzing large datasets.
Desirable:
· CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) or other customs-related certification is an asset.
· Knowledge of CARM and international trade agreements.
· Machinery Industry experience
