IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) is one of the worlds most influential freshwater research facilities. It features a collection of 58 small lakes and their watersheds in northwestern Ontario, Canada. For over 50 years, scientists at IISD-ELA have conducted whole-ecosystem experiments and made significant scientific discoveries related to issues such as acid rain, mercury from air pollution, algal blooms, and pharmaceutical chemicals in water.The facility is operated by the International Institute for Sustainable Developmentan independent think tank headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional land of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Ojibwe-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and homeland of the Mtis Nation.

IISD-ELA acknowledges that its research facility is located on Treaty 3 lands, and the care of these lands during experimentation and restoration to their original state is implicit in its mission. Many regional schools come to the facility to learn more about the science of aquatic ecosystems.

Overview

The Line Cook will work under the direction of the Head Chef and First Cook on all aspects of food preparation and cleaning.

This is a seasonal position beginning April 14, 2025, and ending November 7, 2025. The Head Chef must live on-site at the IISD-ELA facility. Transportation to the research camp is provided from Winnipeg, Manitoba, when available. Room and board are provided, including Internet and laundry facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Accountable and responsible for maintaining a culture of safety and nutrition.
  • Follow instructions to prepare nutritious meals for camp residents, ensuring high quality and presentation that meet the specific dietary needs and restrictions of camp residents.
  • Safely operate kitchen equipment to maintain clean stations and adhere to food safety standards to prevent cross-contamination and ensure safe food handling.
  • Monitor supplies for proper food storage and rotate kitchen inventory.
  • Clean the kitchen, dining hall, and washroom as assigned.
  • Remove trash, recycling, and composting to designated areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Strong cooking skills with attention to detail and organization.
  • Experience working in a facility similar to the IISD-ELA field station is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal instructions.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to read and comprehend food product labels and safety instructions.
  • Flexibility to work split shifts within the kitchen team schedule.
  • Capability to work safely in close quarters and congested areas.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, work, and reside in a remote field station with dormitory-style living arrangements.

  • Based at the IISD-ELA research station. IISD-ELA provides on-site living accommodations and food.
  • Potential for periods of high workload, requiring efficient time management and adaptability.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently reaching below the waist and above the shoulder.
  • Repetitive hand movements in food preparation.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 20 kg) safely.

Term: The contract is a full-time term position starting April 14, 2025, and ending November 7, 2025

Salary: CAD 950CAD 1,000 per week (based on qualification and experience)
