Who We Are
The College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC (CCHPBC, or the College) is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the xmkym (Musqueam), Swxw7mesh (Squamish), and slilwta (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. The College regulates over 10,000 health professionals across British Columbia, including chiropractors, massage therapists, naturopathic physicians, and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and acupuncturists.
Formed on June 28, 2024, through the amalgamation of four provincial health profession regulators, the College was established as part of the Ministry of Healths initiative to modernize the health profession regulatory framework in B.C. Its primary role is to protect public health and safety by licensing and regulating health professionals and the settings in which they practice. This includes ensuring that every health professional within its purview is fully qualified to provide safe and ethical care.
About This Employment Opportunity
The College is seeking a motivated individual with a strong academic record; a keen eye for detail; strong analytical, organizational and communications skills; curiosity; and the desire to work in service of the public interest in the role of Paralegal.
Reporting to Legal Counsel, Inquiry & Discipline, the Paralegal will support General Counsel Inquiry & Discipline acting as the Colleges privacy officer by assisting with the handling of freedom of information requests and responses to such requests, and also by assisting with the preparation of legal memoranda and briefing notes. This role will suit a paralegal who is looking for an alternative to working in private legal practice. While relevant experience is an asset, more junior candidates with a strong academic record and an interest in working in this area will also be considered.
It is essential for all College staff to contribute to a team approach with a public protection focus, delivering efficient services that align with and allow the College to meet its regulatory, strategic, and operational goals.
Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)
Conducting legal research.
Drafting or editing correspondence or other documents as directed by Legal Counsel and the Manager and/or
Director, Inquiry and Discipline.
Preparing and distributing meeting materials for Inquiry Committee and/or panel meetings.
Preparing disclosure for Section 35 consideration meetings and distributing to Inquiry Committee panels and
arranging for delivery to the registrant.
Compiling responsive materials for the Health Professions Review Board on review of complaint and registration
matters.
Preparing documents for registration and discipline hearing matters.
Handling unauthorized practice/use of reserved title files, including drafting cease and desist letters.
General file management.
Other duties as assigned by the Legal Counsel or Director, Inquiry and Discipline.
Qualifications and Skills
Graduate of a recognized paralegal program.
Two years of experience as a paralegal (preferably in a regulatory environment).
Experience working for a provincial healthcare regulator an asset.
Knowledge of health profession regulation including understanding of the Health Professions Act.
Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication.
Tech savvy with excellent working knowledge of cloud computing systems and Microsoft Office suite.
Maintain confidentiality and discretion of information received while performing work functions.
Demonstrated ability to work productively within a team but also independently.
Organized and detail oriented.
Collaborative spirit with a passion for fostering regulatory excellence.
An individual who meets either the established formal qualification or the accepted equivalency can be considered equally for this role.
Compensation and Perks
The compensation for this position ranges from $65,520 to $81,900 annually, based on a 37.5-hour work week. The starting salary will be determined by factors such as the candidates job-related knowledge, skills, experience, the salaries of peers within the same range, market conditions, and other relevant considerations.
