Position Purpose & Overview

The Marketing Content Specialist is a key member of the Advancement team and is responsible for creating, distributing and analyzing content across the schools various platforms in line with our marketing strategy and in support of the schools Mission and Vision.

As the schools storyteller, you will develop content that shows the achievements, passion and expertise that students experience daily at St. Johns School (SJS). You will be in the middle of classes, activities and events at the school, reporting to our stakeholders on the schools community and programs. You will be responsible for distributing content through email, websites, social media and print, and using your excellent copywriting and editing skills to develop and reinforce the SJS brand.

Working on your own and alongside the schools Visual Content Creator, the Marketing Content Specialist will develop ideas and create engaging content for our various constituents, including but not limited to, current parents, prospective parents, students, donors, alumni, grandparents, past parents and the wider community.

This position will focus on:

  • Bringing to life the schools key messages to position the school appropriately for prospective families.
  • Providing informational and inspiring updates for the school's community.
  • Promoting the schools fundraising programsAnnual Giving and endowmentto secure and maintain philanthropic support.

Key Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities and duties are inclusive of, but not limited to:

  • Develop ideas and create story-driven content that raises awareness of SJS and promotes our key messages.
  • Develop and manage a content and communications calendar that ensures delivery of timely and engaging content to our audiences.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders across the school to be in a position to learn about and develop stories and content.
  • Work alongside the Visual Content Creator (and any outside suppliers) to create and deploy content for the school website, email communications, social media channels, media relations, marketing campaigns and internal communication platforms.
  • Manage the schools social media presence, and where appropriate, respond to messages and comments.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of content, and suggest and implement improvements.
  • Provide copywriting and editing support to the Advancement team and other stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Maintain the schools written communications style guide, and follow and reinforce the schools brand guidelines.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the schools privacy policy and consider how it might impact your work.
  • Provide back-up support to the work of the Visual Content Creator and other colleagues as appropriate.

Required Qualifications and Key Skills

Education and Work Experience

  • Proven success in creating stories to generate content for social media, news, blogs, videos and other marketing communications materials.
  • Professional knowledge of the social media landscape and experience working with social media tools.
  • Experience of updating and maintaining content on websites.
  • Experience of creating and sending email marketing and newsletters.
  • Experience working in the education industry and/or an IB school is an asset.
  • Experience with video production and photography is an asset.
  • Experience with project management software is an asset.
  • Experience with Adobe suite and/or Canva is an asset.
  • Need to be legally entitled to work in Canada.

This role will require working hours outside of school office hours: often evening events; occasionally going offsite to document student programs; and occasional morning and weekend commitments.

On rare occasions where there are urgent needs at the School, an employee may be assigned to temporarily backfill role(s) critical to the schools operations and business continuity.

Conditions of Employment

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training, concussion training, Level 1 first-aid training provided by St. Johns School and provide consent for a criminal background check for the vulnerable sector.
  • Clearance on criminal record checks for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment
  • The ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment.


Job Information

  • Full-time permanent contract starting immediately.

  • Salary ranges from $70,000 to $80,000 based on experience
  • Five weeks of paid time off, including 2 weeks of vacation, 2 weeks of winter break, and 1 week of spring break
