Position Overview
At Travel Alberta, we are redefining what it means to be a leader in tourism and economic development. As the provincial destination management organization, we've embraced an ambitious goal: doubling Alberta's tourism sector to $25 billion in annual visitor spending by 2035 - and we're not waiting for investment to come to us; we're building business cases to seek it out.
The Manager, Investment Analysis & Tourism Development plays a key role in bringing this vision to life by identifying opportunities, analyzing market demand, and developing strategies to support the attraction of private and public investment. You will build business cases, assess feasibility, and turn data into compelling investment proposals for projects ranging from $250K to over $500M. Working closely with private investors, government agencies, and industry partners, you will help shape Alberta's next generation of attractions, accommodations, and infrastructure.
This role requires financial expertise, competitive analysis, project management, and stakeholder engagement. You will balance data-driven decision-making with creative thinking to ensure investments benefit both visitors and Albertans.

Core Accountabilities & Responsibilities
Business Case Development and Investment Attraction
Develop and deliver investment pitches and business cases that attract private and government funding for Alberta's tourism sector.
Conduct in-depth financial modeling, feasibility studies, and risk assessments to support investment pitches and proposals.
Prepare and deliver business cases tailored to diverse stakeholders, including private investors, Indigenous communities, and government agencies.
Lead the development of innovative and persuasive narratives for high-value projects ($250K–$500M+), ensuring alignment with Alberta's tourism goals.
Data-Driven Insights and Research Application
Identify and leverage proprietary and external data to inform tourism investment strategies, and business cases to provide internal and external stakeholders with actionable insights.
Identify key data sources and gather insights to evaluate investment opportunities.
Develop and share insights through competitive analyses, visitor behavior studies, and economic forecasts.
Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., Research & Insights) to integrate data into business cases and ensure decisions are supported by robust analysis.
When data gaps exist, craft alternative narratives using available information to maintain a compelling investment story.
Project Management and Reporting
Track the progress of investment initiatives and provide regular updates to internal and external stakeholders.
Develop and implement tools and frameworks to monitor performance metrics for ongoing projects.
Support special projects and ad hoc initiatives as assigned by the Director.
Strategic Relationship Building
Build relationships with key stakeholders to support long-term investment strategies and tourism development goals
Build and maintain partnerships with stakeholders, including local communities, private investors, economic development agencies, and Indigenous groups.
Represent Travel Alberta at industry events, investor meetings, and government forums to advocate for Alberta's tourism vision.
Facilitate collaboration among cross-functional teams to align internal and external efforts on high-priority projects.
Sustainable and Strategic Tourism Development
Ensure investment projects align with sustainability principles and contribute to Alberta's long-term tourism strategy.
Apply global tourism trends and innovative practices to investment proposals.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualification (Essential) - Education/Training/Certification
Bachelor's degree in business administration, Commerce, Economics, Tourism, or a related field.
A Master's degree (MBA or equivalent) with a focus on economic development, finance, or tourism is preferred.
Competencies, Experience, Knowledge, Skills
Minimum 3–5 years of experience in financial analysis, investment planning, or tourism development, with a proven track record of managing projects ranging from $250K to $100M+.
Analytical Thinking: Exceptional ability to synthesize data, perform financial analyses, and develop actionable recommendations.
Strategic Thinking/Execution: Proven ability to think critically and support the development and execution of strategies that balance short-term project execution with long-term tourism development goals, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.
Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information in a clear, concise, and compelling manner tailored to diverse audiences.
Relationship Management: Skilled at building and maintaining rapport with a wide range of stakeholders, including investors, government officials, Indigenous groups, and community partners.
Adaptability: Ability to operate in dual modes, seamlessly shifting between high-level strategy and hands-on program execution.
Experience developing and presenting investment cases to stakeholders.
Proven success in leveraging data and insights to inform project decisions and drive investment opportunities.
Strong presentation skills, with the ability to communicate investment opportunities effectively.
Knowledge of the visitor economy, including investment landscapes, land-use considerations, and key tourism sectors (accommodation, attractions, transportation).
Awareness of global tourism trends and innovations that could enhance Alberta's competitive positioning.
Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, forecasting, and market analysis tools.
Experience with business intelligence and data visualization platforms, such as DOMO, Tableau, or Power BI.
Strong project management skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage deadlines, and deliver results with attention to detail.
Ability to craft creative solutions when data gaps exist, leveraging storytelling to build compelling investment narratives.
Required Qualification (Big Advantages)
Knowledge of Indigenous tourism practices and the ability to engage with Indigenous communities in a culturally appropriate manner.
Multilingual abilities, particularly proficiency in French, are considered a significant advantage.
Certification as a Professional Economic Developer (Ec.D.) is considered an asset.
