Position Purpose & Overview

St. Johns School is an independent, co-educational, non-denominational, university preparatory day school situated in the Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver. Serving 570 JK through Grade 12 students in an urban setting, SJS boasts a vibrant, accomplished, well rounded student community striving for excellence in academics, athletics and the arts. We are a member of the Independent Schools Association of BC, an associate member of the National Association of Independent Schools, USA, and an IB World School offering the PYP, MYP, and DP programmes.

St. Johns School is seeking enthusiastic, energetic, and creative educators to join us as Teachers on Call. Our teachers enjoy working in a vibrant and growing environment. We invite applications from generalists and specialist teachers in elementary, middle, and secondary schools who demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong work ethic, with proven knowledge of the BC Curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

  • Is familiar with the schools TOC information package, school values, and procedures and adheres to these.
  • Provide quality instruction for students as required filling classroom teacher absences on a day-to-day basis or short term basis as required in either Junior School, Senior School, or both as appropriate.
  • Effectively deliver lessons according to established plans provided by teachers while adhering to the school's curriculum and values.
  • Work collaboratively with school staff, students, and families to ensure the success and well-being of students.
  • Support an effective learning environment that fosters inquiry, critical thinking, and student participation.
  • Demonstrates open mindedness when working with all SJS community members (students, faculty, etc.) from across a variety of grade levels, subject areas, and in various activities.
  • Establish a safe and positive learning environment in line with school values and ensuring student safety and wellbeing.
  • Report any student concerns (for example: injuries, accidents, illnesses, discipline problems) to the appropriate faculty or administration immediately or as soon as possible to do so.
  • Provide a daily written brief to teachers, ensuring clear communication of the lesson outcome and all relevant information. This will support the absent teachers to continue learning upon their return with clear knowledge of how students progressed in their absence.
  • Adapt and accommodate teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of learners, supporting inclusive education principles.
  • Maintain professionalism and a strong work ethic while demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness to the needs of students.
  • Provide other teaching duties and support other activities as required. Other duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
    • co-curricular activities
    • Experiential learning (field trips, outdoor education experiences, etc.)
    • School events (spirit days, assemblies, sporting events, etc.)
    • Supervision of students during breaks and lunch time

It should be understood that the activities, responsibilities and obligations of this position may be modified from time to time, through discussion between the direct supervisor and the employee, in order to effectively meet the requirements of the School. On rare occasions where there are urgent needs at the School, an employee may be assigned to temporarily backfill role(s) critical to the schools operations and business continuity.

Position Details

  • Casual position with hours determined by the needs of the school.
  • Work location: on site
  • Wage: $325 per day for the 2024/25 school year. Daily rate to be adjusted for the 2025/26 school year.

Required Qualifications and Key Skills

Education & Work Experience

  • Valid BC Certificate of Teaching.
  • Bachelor of Education or post-degree program in Education.
  • Knowledge of current BC Curriculum.
  • Strong work ethic and professional commitment.
  • Independent School experience is considered an asset.

  • Proven experience as an enthusiastic, innovative, and caring teacher.
  • Commitment to working within a collaborative learning environment of students, teachers, and parents.
  • Proficient in integrating technology in the classroom to enhance and transform the learning experience.

Conditions of Employment

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training, concussion training, Level 1 first-Aid training provided by St. Johns School and provide consent for a criminal background check for vulnerable sector.
  • Clearance on criminal record check for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment.
  • Ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment.
